the shadowing and gradients make it look like it's going for realism, but the effects created still look like cartoon renditions of what tubing and piping actually looks like. it's not bad, but it needs work.

The shadows and lights aren't consistent. One orange lens area is lit from the upper left, the other from the upper right. - the same problem exists on the curved hoses. If you could redo so the lighting all matched up, I'd give a higher rating for the actual aestetics. The gray scale chosen is very good with the orange.
This also forces icon placement a lot. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm wondering whether you expect people to put icons on the bottom orange bar, or below it. It will be interesting to see how it works with the rest of 'elegant'.

I don't know why you called it elegant because that isn't the look that it has.

The gradients look good but maybe you should have spent more than 30 minutes on it? heh.
