You have the right mixture of text and imagery going and even the layout, but the boldness of it just does not fit for some reason. Try experimenting with a smaller font size and different font types. You are off to an ok start.

I noticed the sharpness also, I could never have this as my background it is way to sharp. But you have the basic elements for a good wallpaper you just need to build on it. Add more effects make a certain point that attracts attention and blend everything a little smoother.

solution, flatten and dupe the background, gauss. blur at about 5 to 15%, set trans. for duped layer around 10 to 25%. Bye bye sharpness.

The numbers are too much like a ruler. I'd use some random numbers, after all, it's element X. Use a bitmap font, most definitely.

I'd also use a low level flood illumination on the center of the cube object. Maybe start the flood southeast of the cube going toward the center.
