Artist's Note
my desktop is shown in the screenshot. Here are the other mode of my desktop:
navigator is the navigator mode. database is the people database in the navigator mode.
download desktop.zip for the active desktop. Heres instructions on how to set it up.
System Req: -IE 5.0+ is a MUST -1024x768 -Winxp (it might work with other versions, not sure) -Not for slow computers. I have a 2.26gz, 1 gig of ram. Ti4600. It runs with no slow down whatsoever. So I am guessing minimum system req is 1.5ghz, 256k ram, decent geforce/ati.
Instructions on how to set it up: 0. download the zip file and unzip into a directory. 1. right click on desktop. go to properties. go to customize desktop. 2. click on the web tab. 3. click on new. 4. go to browse. 5. choose mainHTML.html from the directory you unziped the files into. 6. press okay. 7. choose the mainHTML.html file from the list. click synchronize. 8. if its checked, uncheck lock desktop items 9. press okay. apply. 10. now you should see a little square box with the html inside of it. oh but before you do anything with that box, first right click on the desktop. go to arrange icons. then click on hide icons. 11. now the nasty icons are gone. move your mouse near the edge of the square box. a gray border should appear that'll let you move it arround. click on the maximize button. now you should be able to see the whole thing. 12. you can go back to the customize deskop/web tab and lock the box if you want so the gray border won't show up when you move your mouse to the edge of the box.
Hotkeys 1 - you switch to navigator mode after you push 1, press: q - you switch to classes a - switch to database z - switch to links 2 - switches to desktop mode after press 2, press: w - switch to system links s - apps links x - entertainment links c - folder links 3 - window explorer 4 - IE 5 - If you have it installed in the same place, it will open AOL 6 - AIM
This is just a test version. I plan to add a lot more features after my finals. -desktop alert box alarm clock -html entry addition for the database -take full advantage of PNG's opacity and transparent features. You guys'll be able to use this as a template and skin it!
**update to clarify, active desktop is a windows feature that basically lets you make a webpage/html file as your desktop background.

Gotta give props because I'm a fan of Amano's work, but I don't really care for the shell (or whatever it is, it's new to me). Even though I don't like the shell, your use of it works well so far.

In a word: REVOLUTIONARY.
Daemonkao, this IS what customization is all about. I have a 1280x1024 setup, so the wall doesn't look quite right, but I tried all the links, and the whole affair left me thinking this: this sets the bar higher around here. THis is cusomization to the max - the possibilities are virtually endless. You've put the link targets on the same page, instead of on a new page, nice touch, I like it on different pages, but your method just makes things faster. I honestly believe that people should reserve judgmetn until they've tried this out - I have it running right now, and its a great experience. Totally interactive, smooth, clean, no icons, like a totally integrated system.
I'm giving this 100 becuause 1: this is the first of kinds in custo (although similar thingd have been done by others, such as VictorC, but not like this), 2: it sets the bar that much higher and is done very well, 3: the links are appear on-page and not in new pages (the targets, that is), and 3: The user can view the source file and cusomize it to his/her tastes - just change the links!!
Beautiful work! This really sets a new standard around here, and I really think it would be cool to have an active desktop section for things like this. IMHO, the old desktops just don't cut it anymore, it''ll be very tough for me to judge an explorer screenshot on the same level as an active desktop submission . . . .
BTW, you'll need to find a way to open exe's without seeing that download prompt. There is way, its in last week's message posts . . . I think its target= self

OK. daemonkao. You did a revolutionary thing. But i donīt think a lot of us will switch to HTML. Or maybe? I donīt know. I am looking forward to see more such setups. But i think this will "split" us in two groups. (sorry for the expression.. but i donīt know how to express else. dont understand it wrong please). There will be a group doing custo in the old way with a bit jelaoussy about the HTML boys and girls. And the new "upper class" useing HTML. As for me i think i will stay with my explorer shell. I like it much. And i think i will stop customizing. I want to do more skins. More wallpapers. hough. Sorry i swift away. To put it in a nut shell: THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN!!!

I dunno... i kinda already did something like this... Of course I'm not really sure what this navigator thing is, and there's definatly no question that this is much better than mine, but, um, it doesnt seem that amazing to me. Someone can tell me if I'm wrong...

>>BTW, you'll need to find a way to open exe's without seeing that download prompt>> hmm..it doesn't show a download prompt for me. It just loads the prog. Did you click on the link in IE? If you click the link with it on your active desktop, then the link should act like a normal program link.
>>good customizing, but its kinda ugly..no offense>> none taken. I'll work more on the graphics next version. The problem with how I made this test version is that I designed the graphics around the coding..so I'll try it the other way next time.
>>upper class>> I don't see why this will split us into two. Active Desktop, is exactly what it says, just a desktop; it does not change the taskbar, it doesn't change the windows appearance, it doesn't change how the start menu looks. I plan to use both shells and active desktop in the future. I just see active desktop as a more in depth way of customizing my desktop. Revolution?..more like evolution.
