folder shortcuts in explorer

what would be the best way to add shortcuts in the normal windows file explorer? i tried to edit the tip.htm that displays daily tips in a seperate field in explorer if you open it, but my link-tags didn't do anything. if i use the normal link toolbar, i can add shortcuts to folders, but when i click them they all open in new windows, and that's not the kind of behaviour i want.
i want to be able to have a list of folders i access often and be able to click them and make the current explorer window jump to that folder, both in the file view and the tree view.

please tell me if you know of a good way to do this.

What the hell are you talking about? tip.htm? Are you doing something with Active Desktop? It helps if you tell us that you are. What the hell is a link-tag? Link toolbar?

Seriously. What the fuck is going on.

ok, my description was probably a bit messy, but, what i wanna do is this: i want to have shortcuts to the folders i access often, i want them to be visible and accessible all the time in windows file explorer, and i want the current file explorer window to jump to the folder when i click the shortcut (and not in a new window).
i'm not doing anything with active desktop, i'm just using the normal explorer for files.

please bear with me now because my windows is in swedish so some translations of the text in xp may not be accurate.

the tip.htm file is a file located in windows\web\ folder, it is used to display tip of the day inside file explorer. if you select view > explorer-fields > tip of the day, then you get a small field at the bottom of the right part of the file explorer that displays tip.htm. what i tried to do with this was that i added < a > html tags (this is what i called link-tags) in tip.htm that i tried to point at folders. the links showed up but nothing happens when i click them.

the other thing i tried was to use the link toolbar. in internet explorer you have many toolbars, including the one where you can put your own links or bookmarks if you will, that shows at the top of the window together with the buttons. this link toolbar can also be added to a normal file explorer window (right click anywhere on the top grey area of the window and select "links") and you can put shortcuts to folders in that toolbar. however, when i do this, the folders open when i click the shortcuts, but they open in a new file explorer window and this is not what i want. i want to be able to click the shortcut and make the current file explorer window jump to the folder that the shortcut points to.

even if you don't understand what i tried to do, do you know of a way to have a set of shortcut links to folders in the file explorer that is accessible at all times?

i have to say, your idea of using the tip of the day function to display html reference tags was a stroke of genius. too bad it didn't work for you.

as for getting explorer links to open in the same window, i'm fairly certain there is a setting that controls that either somewhere in tools>folder options, or perhaps in the explorer options in TweakXP.

Nice idea. My guess would be to play with the target= attribute. No idea what the target would be. _parent maybe?

there's a lot of things we want. makes me think of a calvin and hobbes strip where they say "what if you could wish for anything in the world" hobbes says he wants a tuna sandwich to which calvin responds "A sandwich?!? What kind of stupid wish is that!?! Talk about a failure of imagination! I'd ask for a trillion billion dollars, my own space shuttle, and a private continent!". the strip ends with hobbes eating a tuna sandwich and saying "I got my wish."

back to topic (my tuna sandwich)

@merkurixx: the tools>folder options are already correct, it's set to open in the same window so this setting doesn't seem to effect what i'm trying to do.
i assumed you meant the powertoy tweakui for xp, i downloaded it and looked at the options but there where none related to my problem.

@FnaD: the target option was the first thing that came to my mind too and i tried some different targets, but nothing works, it won't do anything with folder links. i even tried rightclicking the link and select open in new window (even though this is not what i want), but nothing happens. i also tried to change the href between f:///c:/blabla/ and c:\blabla\ (with and without the slash at the end) but it made no difference, and when i hover the link it always says f:///c:/blabla/ in the status bar.
i now also tried to put a normal http adress in the href and i can get that to open in the little field, and also in a new internet explorer window.
my conclusion of this is that the tip field will not react to local folder links at all. i also tried some javascripting but i'm getting error on page, and if i try the same in internet explorer, javascript:open('file:///C:/blabla/'), i'm getting access denied...

I also want the same thing, and found this thread through Google. But I am no programmer. Will keep looking, and will post the link if I find it.

Maybe Findexer is what you're looking for? It replaces the webview, you can add links to w/e folders and they appear on the left side of the windows file manager, a click will not open a new folder. seems like that is all the things you wanted.

I know this is an old topic but just for reference sake...

The reason hyperlinks wont work in the tips pane is due to the separation of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer in XP. One of the biggest security concerns of Windows2000 was the ability for html hyperlinks to execute programs from inside the File System. If HTML where able to execute programs on your computer, its easy to imagine just how malicious websites could become.... visit the wrong web page by mistake and suddenly your hard drive is formatted? No thanks! Thus HTML inside the file system is severely limited in function (thankfully~!!!).

There is an alternative to FindeXer, and its built into windows -- the favourites bar! If you don't use IE then the favourites folder seems largely redundant (IE saves its bookmarks there but Firefox doesn't). You can strip all the junk out and put your own shortcuts to folders and files in there; a quick Ctrl+i will open it up in File Explorer. And that's one less third party app (mind you, FindeXer is a little more flexible).

On another note, I would really like to utilise the tips pane for something a little more interesting than displaying the tip of the day. It would be great if it could be used as a vista style info pane, but im not sure if this is possible due to its limitations.
