I'm moving into my dorms next month and thought it was time to get rid of that old yellowing CRT. Seeing as how the workspace on my laptop can get pretty cluttered, I was looking for a 17-18 inch month thats relatively cheap and still pretty decent. What are your recommendations?
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/print_content.asp?id=samsung213t& cookie%5Ftest=1 Probably one of the best investments I've ever made. Save for a little bit longer and I promise you wont be disappointed. When I first bought it, it was $1200 now you can get it for as little as $600. I've had it for almost 2 years now and I'm still in love with it.
i don't believe i've ever seen an 18 inch monitor in CRT or LCD. 15... 17... 19... sure. no 18, though.
what you're looking for in a decent LCD is a fast response time (under 14ms is good) and decent contrast ratio. native res of 1280x1024 or more is a plus.
last black friday i got a 19" samsung syncmaster 912n for under $300. i couldn't be more pleased with it, and all specs aside, it's pretty sexy on its own.
pay attention to dell deals on the deal sites (like the ones fate0000 mentioned) - dell makes fantastic monitors (using a lot of the same parts that apple does), and you can get incredible deals on them if you just wait for stackable coupons and %off deals and the like.
I am thinking about two Samsung 193p. Samsung released an updated model from this monitor and i hope the price for the older model will go down a little.
Those panels i have seen now have been all good. The ones from Dell are really really okay. This is my opinion. I say as long as the response time and the contrast good enough that your eye wonīt see the effects the monitor really is okay. And i think for us doing graphics the response time isnīt the only important thing. I am thinking about two 193p or one Dell. Or wait for Samsungs new thin CRTīs
Thanks for all the advice, especially for those links to slickdeals and dealnews. I've been eyeing around and right now, I'm looking at either the samnsung 192N 19" or the Dell 1905FP.
My other question is, are refurbished items usually reliable?
