i recently moved into a new apartment and set up a media pc for audio. currently, i'm in the process of ripping all of my cds to mp3 and ditching my 300 disc cd changer.
now onto my question: i would like to have a good amount of ambient tunes to play in my apartment to set a decent mood/tone for the place. i can't really suggest any particular genre because that is too limiting so suggest away!
here is what i have right now that i would consider optimal ambient music:
photek - modus operandi dj shadow - endtroducing beethoven - pretty much anything vivaldi - the four seasons langtry - as upon the road thereto iron and wine - the creek drank the cradle
so as you can see, it's not strictly instrumental stuff. some of it has lyrics but it's all fairly mellow. give me more.
radiohead - sail to the moon) any and all sigur ros (especially viðrar vel til loftárása and ny batteri) the notwist - off the rails (and the rest of the album) yo la tengo - night Falls on Hoboken air - alone in kyoto slowdive - souvlaki space station
i need to run, but if you like these, i'll suggest more later :]
hm. i have that slowdive album but i haven't listened to it yet (along with some other slowdive). i also have some sigur ros and i suppose you are correct, that would work.
Raul Midon - State of mind Feist - let it die Lizz Wright - dreaming wide awake Povo - we are povo Lippok & B. Morgenstern - tesri
These are some from different directions of music. And with all of them you will have a very smooth and ambient atmosphere. If you are more looking for background music i would recommed compilations like all those "Coffe lounge moccha bar compilations"
Next year i will have my own flat, too. And it really is time for that ;)
i wouldn't consider coldplay ambient or even decent music. also, the postal service and death cab, while good bands, are too attention-heavy to create an atmosphere. they attract too much attention to themselves.
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu Haydn - "Emperor" quartet Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor Bach - Fugue in G minor (Little Fugue) Santana - El Farol Santana - Samba Pa' Ti Santana - Europa Mozart - Symphony # 40 Ravel - Bolero
and my favorites: KJAH and CHATTERBOX FM from GTA3.

mojo knows EITS, he introduced me to the them, like, a million years ago.
I would say, besides the friday night lights soundtrack, their music is way too dynamic and engaging to be used as aural filler. But it does gush atmosphere.
They are the shit sandwich.

If i would be free to make what i want to i would like to learn from this person. He really impressed me the first time i heard and saw something from him. Especially because the person which is very close to him is called Pia, too ...
If you do like him Mojomonkee you will have the perfect music.
Sorry for this double post, but check out Yuichiro Fujimoto as well. Yuichiro and Takagi are similar in vein, but the former is slower and has less percussion. Both are instrumental, however.
as far as EITS goes... too much crescendo and climax to be considered "ambient". try falling asleep to EITS. it's a futile exercise. you'll doze off to something like "the moon is down" and wake up to cymbals and a driving bassbeat while a high pitched guitar wails. no good.
same goes for anyone on constellation records... gybe, silver mt. zion, etc. although valley of the giants might work for ambient sounds. that self titled album of theirs is golden even if it is a semi-failure of a concept album.
oh snap i forgot. if anyone wants some sweet-ass-sweet minimal piano check out eluvium's new album "an accidental memory in the case of death". he's on the same label as EITS and his new album is the bee's knees. his other album "lambant material" makes some good guitar soundscapes too.
I forgot someone too, Télépopmusik. They are one of my favorite groups, and they are french, woot. Their music is real shallow and mellow and I think it falls into the catergory as ambient.
i'm suprised garon didn't add hi5 or the wiggles to that list ... lol :D
Er, I'm not sure what you mean by that but whatever
oh, totally forgot about Britney Spears. check out her earlier work if you're looking for something mellow to fill up the room. there are a few lyrics, but they definitly add to the ambientness of the whole work. and try some DMX; he's a little iffy, but he generally does nice, soothing stuff.
This is the long preview for the coming debut album. It will be in the store in the end of august. Together with prints in A5, A4, and A3. I will post everything new i can tell you :)
Thank you for the Eluvium suggestion, mojo. I'm really really liking this. Mellow and melodic goooodness. I'm also a sucker for piano.
Imrik, you sure are the Renaissance man! Amazing artwork, coding, websites, designs, and now music! Awesome guitar work. I'll definately buy your upcoming record.
