Giraffe says:

A black pope is not such a crazy idea Cardinal Francis Arenzi is Nigerian and considering 60% of Catholics are non-white and poor he is considered a front runner for the papacy. He has strong support inside the Vatican and is likely to be able to consolidate some of the differences between Rome and Islam.
There is also strong support for a Spanish or Latin American Pope as cardinals from these territories now outnumber Italians in the Vatican.

How is he supposed to be the conduit to God? I thought anyone could talk to God at anytime with any need without having to go through someone else.

Don't forget the Latin American contenders. You know, the ones from Mexico, Colombia, and Honduras. After all, there are millions and millions of devout catholics in the Americas. How about outsourcing the papacy out of Europe?

The Catholic Church has long developed this concept. That's how they claim the ultimate moral authority and why they used to be so much more powerful, back when people where less educated. They claim to rap with God.

Here's what the Church says:

"In matters of faith and morals, the bishops speak in the name of Christ and the faithful are to accept their teaching and adhere to it with a religious assent."

So yeah, anyone can talk to God, but the will of God is supposedly delivered through the clergy, i.e. God talks back to them. And they deliver his messages of how to live and what's right and wrong to us poor saps. And the Pope is the closest to the Lord in this way, from what I understood.

Kinda dangerous, if you want my honest opinion.

Anyway, too bad about the Pope, he was really old though and was obviously in tons of pain. But now we get a new Pope.

HOW ABOUT A WOMAN POPE? Oops.

Everyone's gotta die.

Ahhh so thats what they think, thanks for clearing that up colossus. I could throw my own beliefs and opinions out into the void, but I don't think we want to start a religious debate on poor old unsuspecting custo. ;)

And yes, everyone dies eventually, very good point.

Narco: If they outsourced the papacy out of europe then wouldn't they lose some of the regime they have going to fresh ideas? Just a thought. Although PJP2 went out on a limb a lot so I'm probably wrong.

Giraffe says:

Pope John Paul II was a conservative Pope concerned with bringing people back to the core message of the faith. He was also a campaigner for the poor, many of whom are catholic. He spent the last 25 years filling the Vatican with people who were of a similar mind-set. He made good provision that whoever the next Pope is and wherever he is from the message will be the same, if not more dogmatic. There is already strong representation from the four corners of the world, and even if an Italian got the job he would have to be mindful of that or see many drift to other doctrines.
