What kind of videocard do you have? What kind of a "1.7 GHz processor" do you have? What kind of memory, and how much of it do you have? Give us a little more detail than what you've posted above please.

A 5200 might not cut it for anything but the very lowest settings. New card and some more ram and you should be fine.

Yeah played the demo on a 1.7ghz P4, 512mb ram and 128mb geForce FX 5200, allthough everything was set to medium in the graphics options. Some slowdown if everythings on higher oh above.

My system has 1.6 GHz Athlon, 1 gig of RAM and a Radeon 9600 and HL2 ran really great for me. It's even bearable of the highest settings, though the framerate gets pretty medeocre in bigger areas.

This may help also.I had this system.
AMD Athlon XP 1600+(1.4ghz)
RAM 256Mbs at 266MHZ
ATI 9600 128mbs RAM
Everything chugged with this system. To play I had to turn everything to minmum.Resolution was at 640X480.
Load times were extremely long.Barely playable.
To fix this I got the following.
AMD Athlon XP 2800+(2.1ghz)
RAM 512Mbs at 400MHZ

try this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/gameadvisor/d
efault.mspx

search for the desired game, click 'will this run on my pc?', it analyzes you system, then tells you wether or not the game will run.

you need to be using IE 6 though.
