Reformatting my hard disk
|
Hi,
I've had my Dell 8250 for about 2 years now and I'm considering reformatting the disk (it was reformatted about 3 months after I bought it due to a video card malfunction). I'm wondering if at this point it is worth reformatting.
I defrag my disk every 1-2 weeks, and use a registry claener as well as adaware 1-2 times a month. However, I have noticed a gradual decrease of response time and sensitivity. Additionally there are many files/programs embedded deep within my hard drive that I'm too lazy to dig out and delete.
That said, I'm wondering if a reformat would be the appropriate solution to the aforementioned problems. If so, I'm wondering if anyone has any guidelines that would help facilitate the process.
Thanks, pork

Just make sure that anything worth backing up you so before you format ;)
and also, get your drivers together before hand to make the process much easier(i hate having to look at a low resolution just b/c I didn't take the time to make sure I had all my drivers together).
Then just format....

i don't know how you can be almost 2years without formatting your HD...I have to do it every 6months!
The easiest way for me to reformat my HD is to boot from winXP disk, delete my partititions and creat new ones.

If you have a single win98 boot disk, then you can format it easily, as long as the drive is fat32, not NTFS. Just pop in a Win98 boot disk, and type format C: at the dos prompt(even if your system is WinXP). You can format from WinXP boot disks, it contains 6 boot disks, but the command should be the same. If it asks you do you want to install WinXp just say no. That should send you to the utility box, where you can access utility functions. YOu can always switch the disk to NTFS after reformatting it. I've personally never tried accessing those utility functions from the WinXP Boot disks, but they are there. That is why it needs 6 disks. GL.

ChasUGC: Why do things once more than you need to?
Booting from your XP CD is probably the easiest way to delete current, create new & format partitions before doing an install.
If you really must use a floppy to do the dirty work, I highly recommend checking out Ranish Partition Manager (google), it handles a slew of different partition formats (including FAT12/16/32, NTFS, Linux ext2, and can see/create/delete hidden manufacturer "restore" drives).
Porkachu: Bottom line is this - if you're still running an installation of XP that dates back 2 yrs, your drive is more than likely in a state of such total disarray that you needn't worry about the programs that are installed on it, you're just going to have to bite the bullet and go ahead and reinstall them all after a fresh format/install. You'll be SO glad you did.

Partition the baby too. For one thing, when you put your important files away from the OS drive partition, you don't have to copy them onto the HD again from those heaps of DVDs and CDs, when doing a reformat.
