What is it with...

What's with everyone throwing the mac apple on windows stylexp or windowblinds themes? ALOT of people seem to really love macs but they use PC's. Why? Why not just get a mac? That's like me going to the store, buying a can of coke, and then putting a pepsi sticker on it. It doesn't change the flavor. That PC is still a regular PC running whatever shell, but it is far from being a mac. I just don't understand this trend, but then again, I got banned for not being trendy after being a member here for over 3 years so...

There are advantages to both macs and pcs. One of the major advantages of a mac is style and functionality. One of the major disadvantages is a lack of games for mac. Many people want the best of both worlds, or at least as close as they can get. Things like docks do change the flavor to use your metaphor. As for the apple logo, maybe some people just like the style, or rooting for the underdog, or whatever other reason people have. It isn't a matter of trend, it's a matter of personal preference. I have a feeling that you didn't get banned for not being trendy, you got banned for not respecting other's opinions and styles. Respect: a word to live by.

missbeat: While I'm probably considered an asshole by quite a few people here, that is definitely not the way to do things around here.

People don't love Macs. They like the Aqua look. There's a big difference there, buddy.

There are numerous reasons as to why people don't just go out and get Macs. Since it seems you can't think of them on your own, here are a few:

Price: Self explanatory. At least, I hope it is.

Application Compatibility: Windows software doesn't run on Macs. If I have applications X, Y, and Z that don't run on a Mac, but I like the Aqua look, there isn't any point for me to get a Mac. It makes more sense to emulate the Aqua look. Games come to mind here. Jobs that require using company software also come to mind.

Challenge: This one's twofold. Some people don't want to take the time to relearn how to use their computer. They want the Aqua look, so they emulate it. Also, there are skinners galore who love porting Aqua themes to Windows. Why? Ask them. It's their hobby.

Regarding the Apple logo, some consider their works incomplete ports without it. Simple enough. Take a look at some OS X screenshots if you don't believe me.

About being banned for not being "trendy:" someone's feeling a little angsty today, isn't he? Customize doesn't ban people based on submission work unless it's ripped, so you probably said something inflammatory.

Hey hey wait a second there advent, there are plenty of reasons to own a mac as opposed to a x86 machine if you're interested in running anything that isn't a videogame. Not implying anything with that, but with OS 10 apple has made a system that is stable as a rock, pretty speedy and pretty to boot. As long as you don't have another machine for playing windows based games on (if you absolutely need to play games on your computer) or there isn't some obscure windows only app that you absolutely need then there is simply no reason to not buy a mac.

I'm not a huge mac zealot or fan, and I in fact used to be the complete opposite of that a few years ago, but things have changed a whole bunch recently and if i had the cash to buy another computer right now i know for sure it'd be a second hand G4 or similar. Hell, i'd live with a highly clocked G3 if need be; apple has managed to make OS 10 faster with every update. I doubt you can say that about many other OS's.

In short, people don't love macs because they're afraid of switching to something foreign to them, no matter how quickly they'd adapt to it. (Took me maybe 2 days to really get the hang of my ibook and use it well.) That and the other reasons I mentioned above, not that they'd effect many users.

Ok, so posting again now while i'm a bit less sleepy and trollish. Only skimmed your post at first, so forgive me for sounding like a Mac whore and not really getting anywhere with the rambling. It's just annoying when misinformation keeps getting propagated so much that everyone mistakes it as truth, as is the case with most bad points that people raise against Macs. Note that I said most, not all. No product can be everything to everyone.

The only thing that you were really wrong about is the price issue, which is simply not relevant anymore. The "Macs are expensive" argument has been brought up over and over in pretty much every mac related slashdot thread and has been explained away each time, so believe me when I say that at the same pricepoint you can get a Mac that's just as good as or better than something you'd get from Dell or .

Buy a Mac and you get quality hardware in a nice package that will still be useful a while down the road. That might sound like marketing BS, but it's the plain truth. The old fashion iMacs and clamshell iBooks actually perform better now than they did with previous versions of OS X, if that's any indication of how long your hardware will last you if you go the mac route. And the build quality is top-notch. Hell, I dropped my iBook onto a carpeted floor from 4 feet and not only did it not bust open like I imagine my sisters compaq would, but it kept on running for the rest of the day until I rebooted it to make sure there were no problems. At that point its uptime was probably 2-3 weeks or so, not counting all the time it was suspended. Another thing is that you can hardly ever hear a Mac unless there's disk activity, save G5 boxen with their crazy windtunnels. It's eerie as hell when you have to look at the power led to know if it's on or not.

Aside from that you were pretty much on the money, advent.

Don't get me wrong, robotoverflow- I love Macs. I've been saving up for one for a while, and my friends will never hear the end of my "I want a goddamn Mac right now" rants. :)

I know there's oodles of software available for the Mac platform, and just about all of the major "titles" (Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, etc.) have already been released for it. I'm just pointing out that there's always the situation where people have a certain must-use application that will only run in a Windows environment.

You're right about the price issue; about an hour after I posted this, I read a few things that actually pointed out that Macs were occasionally cheaper than their similarly-equipped Wintel counterparts. But still, if you're strapped for cash, a half-assed generic PC is going to look really friendly when compared to a Mac.

This is kinda fun. :)

Negative, I simply stated truthful opinions, without coming off sounding entirely immature OR cussing by the way. I love how you call me a "dick". But that's your opinion of me.

Advent: Yes, that's a good point about people needing to have the complete look down to the apple symbol to make it feel like a complete port, however it's just that it seems theres only so many ways you can create the mac theme. ALOT of them look the same to me with very minor alterations from eachother in icons/buttons/menus, aside from color swaps, which of course is the biggest alteration.

Yes this is very true as well. I just wanted to understand it more.
