the Cafe Del Mar collection, buddha bar (as AJ said) Nitin Sawhey, Massive Attack, also, you should check out this old album/compilation 'Cafe Mambo - Chill Out Mix' got some really soothing tunes. ______________.. syxx visionleague™
A Perfect circle! Well maybe not while I'm studing cause I wouldn't be able to concentrate cause they're so awesome. Hm... Dj Logic , Dj Shadow , Moby , Paul Oakenfold, Massive Attack , Tricky , Poritishead. Those would work for me.

I hate Cafe Del Mar. Don't get me wrong, i'm very electronic-music-inclined, but of the 'chill out' discs i've heard, Cafe Del Mar's compilations happen to be one of the worst IMHO.
And MOS's chillout stuff would also be there on the bottom of the list.
I find the nicest "chill" music on stuff that aren't really labeled as "chilled." The term 'chillout' has been quite a buzzword since around 2000, so it's been really whored since.
My chilled playlists are usually stuff like melodic progressive breaks, bossa nova, triphop, psy-ambient, dub, etc.
i enjoy any of the Ultra.Chilled ## albums, replace ## with a number from 01 to 04 or 05 (not sure how many there are now). its a great collection of music. sexy babes on the covers too.

The music is influenced chill from different directions
a perfect circle - album : mer de noms (i can't study without apc or soundgarden playing) moby - album : *practically any* (moby, its all in the word, awesome)

"We don't need no stinkin' robot-assembled, computer-controlled black plastic throw away stuff pretending to be audio gear."
there's a song by linkin park, off the meteora cd... i forget what its called, i think it's track #8. it's an instrumental/digital type song, and nice to listen to when you're just staring at the ceiling.
that's session by linkin park. kickass track. not exactly chill out, but definitely trip out. check out incubus' aquoeus transmission. awesome chillout.
you all should definitely listen to some indian music, esp. the ones by AR Rahman. that dude just rocks. some definite chillout stuff among his compositions, but mostly commercial :-S.
also some tracks by the jigmastas have some trippy chillout element to it.
aquoeus transmission is on constant playback on my mp3 player. I love the incorporation of asian instruments in the song. There's nothing like singing about 'floating down a river' to get you relaxed :)
And if all else fails, Enya has got to be the ultimate chill music! If Enya doesn't get you relaxed, nothing else will :P
Danny Howells - 24-7 GateCrasher - Digital Chillout Rob Smith - Up on the Downs Dimitri From Paris - Sacre Bleu Voodoo Roux Verve Remixed Thievery Corporation - DJ Kicks (in fact pretty much anything by Thievery) Saint-Germain-Des-Pres Cafe Jose Padilla - Navigator Giles Peterson (pretty much anything) Kruder & Dorfmeister - Gstone Book (and anything else by K&D). Röyksopp - Melody AM Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain Talvin Singh - Traveller
mer de noms does not fit into the "chill-out" genre of popular music. i thought this thread was to identify "chill" tracks which are "relaxing, ambient, or whatever" and for some they might get that kick from metal (like myself). i posted moby as that does fit into the "chill-out" genre.

If you don´t want to go through the whole list.. the first one by aya is a beautiful album and brilliant chillout. You won´t have heard that before. Slippin´ is an a-class song
This is exactly what i needed, im still gonig through alot of it or trying to get a hold of most now. Great suggestions guys, and imrik, im trying to make my way throught the whole list, thanks for taking the time to get that together for me. Very smooth stuff.
Imrik, thaks for reviving this thread. I love that direction of music and am currently researching those artists you posted. Any more would be appricated.

I Love St.Germain Rose Rouge, theres this one album called ministry of sound chillout sessions , simply because it comes from the ministry of sound you know its good, other than that I dig Moby and some Cafe Del Mar
Also. it would be folly to not mention Tangerine Dream's Rubycon. Often found for a few bucks in the used record shop.
"...eerie psychedelia without the paisleys -- Pink Floyd without the rock...This is a satisfying ambient record from the pre-ambient era, too dark for meditation, and too good to be forgotten."

Seeing this thread come up again... I think I should say something. Sorry, I tend to jump at any chance for musical debate, if this annoys you, you have every right to ignore this post. :)
I don't directly disagree with the concept of "chill" music, I think some music is designed/written for the purpose of relaxation.
However, I do think that music is, or at least shouldbe, an active art form.
Here's what I mean: I think music has been reduced to the role of background noise. It seems that it's mostly used as a backdrop for other activities. Concepts like "driving music" come up - music while you drive. People love to drive fast while listening to techno, etc. A lot of money goes into "movie soundtracks", so your favorite artists can be playing in the background of the awesome movie you're watching. God forbid you listen to "elevator music"... an elevator ride would be too boring without some?
Even at concerts, when you're paying money to see someone play music, people are thinking about about dancing or crowdsurfing or moshpits.
The point is, we listen to music more often while we're concentrating on other things. As our focus goes away from music, it deteriorates. I'm sure many will agree with me when I say that a lot of popular music today is shit... I think that this is one of the reasons why. I guess that's my opinion, though.
The bottom line: I think that every once in a while, at least, we should sit on a sofa, put some headphones on, close our eyes, and listen closely to an album from start to finish. If we find ourselves getting bored, we should either listen closer, or find some better music to hold our interest. :)
If there is music that I can listen to like this, without getting bored, and find it relaxing, then that's what I consider to be good chill music.
I'd love to hear what anyone has to say about this. Apologies for the length.
Of course, as with anything deep house, first look at Naked and Om records :) Check out the album "Strange Flower" by Aya, out on Naked Music.
I got what you mean, acroyear. Esepecially for me as a musician, I've contemplated on this too :) I think you're making a nice statement to the listeners [of music], I hope it'll spark up interest and provoke more appreciation from them.
And as for me, as an electronic music enthusiast, I've heard lots of genres under the electronica tree. One interesting thing I've noticed is a separation between "dancefloor music" and "headphone music".
I really believe music is made to fit certain constraints, just like design. E.g., in design, you may be constrainted to using 3 spot colors because that's only what the medium allows; in music, the musician may be made to skillfully arrange notes and fx to create a flowing rhythm conducive to dancing.
With "headphone" music, these constraints are creatively violated: non-uniform song flow, progressive tones, etc, not worrying about disrupting rhythm (a constraint in dance music), or needing to be mass-marketable (a constraint in pop music), or things like these.
It's creativity unleashed :) It's art (purposeless, boundless) vs. design (made for purpose, constrainted).
Yes, that´s a true argument. I am a big fan of acoustic and live music and there are good and experienced bands in the towns near by. They are bands for over 10 years now and really know their instruments and music.
The first times i went to concerts i didn´t realize that... but as i talked to a guitarist from one band which is playing for a longer time now he said it´s really disappointing to get no applause or any reaction from the listeners. They´re sitting there drinking wine, talking and the music is secondary.
The feedback the band gets is after the concert when people who think they know the members talking to them "oh that was a great concert.. so many emotions"
I have my guitar for over 10 years now. Since i started playing in a band and listen to concerts more carefully i´ve to say it´s really true what my friend said there some months ago. Even in the philharmonie! The philharmonie is a big concert hall in the central town munich. In the end of december i went there to see Diana Krall with two brilliant musicians. But what! I could not believe that. The people did not even know when the songs had their end. They gave applause before the last songs ended. And those have been songs like "devil may care" or "the girl in the other room" which are really famouse songs from this talented lady. That´s making me angry.
I don´t think it´s about the medium you listen to music from. I have a net md and listen carefully to my music. But on the other hand you cannot force everybody to be a music lover like some of us are. But today music is more part of a life style and self expression i think.
And on the third hand! I am a big fan of chill music and albums like the one mentioned from aya or helios are something special to me, too. But a different sort of music.
Listening as a secondary thing which is already a part of life beside the activities doesn´t do it for music. The comparison with the difference between art and design is smart. But therefore i want to say my definition of design is maybe different. There are different sections in design. Industrial design for example plays a big role in the industrial world we are living in and there is a lot possible which would make life easier for the world we are living in and us as humans. But that´s going too far away from the topic. I will stop that.
Here are new cd´s for the musicians and chill lovers
Paolo Conte - Elegia Jacksoul - Resurrected Remy Shand- The way i feel
Helios - Unomia Telepopmusik- Angel milk (which is really good!)
The new Telepopmusik album was a suprise for me. I did not look at their site for a long time. If you like their first cd you will like this one for sure.
Tool - various songs tho Disposition is quite chill Filter - Take my picture America - Horse with no name Infected Mushroom - None of this is real or Mystica Three dog night - Hot town summer in the city
Thanks. I'm glad there's individuals out there who still pay attention. I can't help but get severely discouraged sometimes.
A have a thousand and one intense opinions about today's music, and most of them are extremely pessimistic. I'm not gonna continue to be rude, though, so I'll keep those to myself or to private conversations.
Keep up the awesome customizations, guys. -acroyear

The Used "Sometimes I Just Go For It" is awesome, as are classics like Bach and Beethoven.

If that´s the megakitten i´ve been waiting for years.. it really was a waste. -.- Aggro is frozen chocolate ice cream. I don´t like chocolate. Sorry.. this has nothing to do with the thread but with its replies.
