Hey I am running on a Windows XP operating system right now and I want to switch to Linux. I am a complete newbie at this and I don't know where to start. Can someone help me out? It would be appreciated, thanks.

Well Mandrake linux is pretty newbie-friendly. Just get their ISOs, burn them to CDs and boot from the first CD1. After that it's pretty much self-explanatory.
wtf, thats an explanation. h8r, are you doing a permanent switch over to linux or just a test drive (in which case you could run emulation software like VirtualPC while still retaining Windows) either way you're going to need to get yourself a hold of some installation cds, most distributions are available via the developer's website or various linux user groups around the world for free or pretty dam close (i've got no problem with donation-ware). you have the choice of either purchasing the cds (in which case you get all your installation cds and flowery documentation aswell) or download them (thats what, 5 cds for redhat9 = 3.5gig?, you also get online documentation incase you suck). in the end it comes down to what you need and not what you want, for me redhat is fine (as i'm : A] a retard when it comes to linux B] no good at navigating in CLI C] too dam stupid to switch distibutions whats going to suit your needs you will need to research. good luck h8r.
you don't even need virtualpc if you just want to test the waters of linux. go grab a copy of knoppix and burn it to a cd. no need to install anything as its run from a livecd.
I want to install RedHat linux. I heard u can maintain 2 OS's on one PC, but you have to get another hard drive or something like that. I dunno what all thats about but if thats the case, i'd rather just completely get rid of my windows and put linux on this pc.
I cant use mandrake or anythin like that, only redhat because its for a course, which specifically tells u to install redhat.
The textbook for the course came with 2 CD's but when I insert them in my computer, I just get a folder with all these files in it and none of them are install.exe or anythin like that.
you can have both windows and linux on the same drive, though to the untrained sits nothing short of a pain in the ass and risky. the safest thing to do is to use 2 hds.
if you only have one drive then you need to repartition your drive to accommodate for linux, this usually requires a minimum of 3 partitions, swap, /boot and /.
feck ya, i'm trying to dual boot my bloddy machine. i've using axios on my other machine (the greatest cd boot-up operating system ever! only because i've used it for so long is it the greatest though, knoppix sounds good). n8r, do the double hard drive gig, its by far the easiest to dual in, you have to purchase another hard drive though (there's always a catch, no matter how obvious). as for which os to start with, refer to the comment on my prior post (all linux distro's will make your head sore, especially if its a cli "command line interface like dos.
just for the offspin to this topic, whats easier to navigate in for linux users.
CLI or GUI i'm a sucker for the text mode so thats been my choice.
