I used to have a lot of respect for Custo, before it closed. I can see now why no one has that respect for the site anymore.
Last time I checked, the word "no" did not communicate the ideas you explained here for his first peice. This constitutes a failure to communicate successfully. In regards to that second comment mentioned here, I really have to sit back and wonder what the hell you were thinking. I will remind you that you are an admin. That means that you are expected to act as a model for the members of this site. Despite this, you tell people to "ignore idiots in public ranking." Have you ever heard the phrase, "Do as I say, not as I do?"
If you're going to be an admin, you should behave as an admin. Otherwise, you're no less a nuisance to the site as the so-called idiots in public rankings.

custo RANKS submissions in order (as opposed to giving ratings), which is a harsher system than devart uses because it is impossible for everyone to receive 80's and 90's (or A+'s or whatever system we are comparing this to). in fact, half of the submissions will be below 50, which by traditional standards, seems low. but this is only because we are used to seeing high numbers. think about a test in school: if you receive a 49%, you failed. but on custo, if you got a rank of 49, it means your piece is half way to the top.
many of the criticisms also seem harsh because they are very blunt. if someone doesn't like your art, they are willing to say it around here. in my books, freedom of speech is a good thing because even though it can be abused when people leave mean and pointless comments, it also allows for a lot of constructive criticism.
it is important not to take the rank and criticisms personally. if they can be helpful for you to create better skins and wallpapers (which is the objective of the system as a whole), then that's great. otherwise, ignore them.
the bottom line is this: i'm not asking you to stay at a site where you don't want to be, but i would suggest you consider the merits of custo's system before leaving.
yeah i signed up for an account just to say "fuck this lame site". there is a huge difference between constructive criticism and blatant arrogance, elitism and mudslinging.

DevArt is nonetheless a good community. /me likes it, and me likes custo, too....

Ignoring sensless praise and ignoring sensless abuse are two different things. This community has an equal potential for constructive criticism as does DA's at best, but the phrase, "but the composition sucks," should not come from an admin's keyboard ever. Adminstrator sponsored abuse is inexcusable.
i think now we are getting into another topic. in my opinion, that criticism is constructive. it tells the user that even though other elements may be decent, the overall combination of the different parts doesn't work. BUT the issue this brings up is how it is phrased. if that quote had been said more politely and eloquently (but still conveyed the same information), i don't think people would be complaining.

And getting back to the question of a corny comment on a questionable photo copyright item, that should simply have been deleted for its copyright issue, then the problem of an iffy comment would not have arisen.
If I were not already involved in 3 skinning/graphic sites I'd be happy to offer my services to keep things on the straight and narrow....but alas....;)
If all your going to do is post your lame/stupid comments on peoples work, then just don't post at all. It's not about the score...it's the fact that you have no valid reasons to backup your evaluation.
Yuck, Jafo played the "one front" card. It is good to see admins express themselves as individuals. If miriku thinks like that, let him. Just because he is an admin, doesn't mean he has to be nice to everyone and respect everyone. If people whine and he wants to crack down at them, let him. It makes him part of the experience instead of excluded from it.

Customize: Just un organized. I used to like this place, but the manage uploads section has not been addeded (which should have been there before it launched), its all dis organized, honestly toooo many problems.

morph.... You can opt out of the CD....and not have your stuff included if you don't want it to. You still have total control over the placement and distribution of your work. The only difference is that moronic comments on your work can and will be deleted if you wish them to be.

Everybody holds to his/her opinions to a greater or lesser degree; it's your manner of expressing your opinions so condescendingly that merits your being called conceited. At any rate, the people who own/operate this site can do whatever the hell they want: the opinions of these people are what determine the appropriateness of this site's policies, nothing else. Hence, your statement that "adminning a site can be handled better" has all the pretense of authority without any basis for it: what criterion do you have for determining what constitutes "good" administrating at customize.org? You can make all the bare assertions you want, but your opinion will have no value to anyone else unless you can actually provide some sort of justification. So what if you admin 3 other sites? To consider this a justification for your high-handed remarks just reveals your obviously mistaken assumption that all graphics sites exist to accomplish the same goal, or even that there is a goal per se at all.
Incidentally, people/admins at other sites such as deviantart, while perhaps making more positive comments in general, really do not have anything mind-blowing to say about any given submission. Comments generally follow two modalities: people either make vague and uninteresting statements such as "I like this part but not that part," or they string together two or three banal adjectives that do nothing but give a general indication of approval or censure. In this vain, the ego-stroking evident at one site is no more desirable than the abuse rampant at another, since I think most people contribute to get some thoughtful, substantial input about their work rather than "fix this," "cool =)" or "you suck." These trends pervade every "community" graphics site I've ever visited, which is why I don't submit anymore.
It is merely that I remember this site back in '98 as being somewhat better than its current rendition. I guess that is just rose-coloured glasses and it has always been the same as it is now?
Talking goals, just what is the prime directive here at Custo? Perhaps... Providing a whipping post for inane immature commentary on any and all works, supported and justified, and sometimes instigated by the admins themselves? Great. If that's the go. Post exactly that on the main page and all will be fore-warned.
Otherwise, if the site is meant to be a reasoned and well-managed community receptacle for skins and walls, then let it be that too, or rather, instead.

I know that I'm walking into this discussion a little late and all (coming out of an bit of a vacation from Custo) but it seems that all I can do now that the dice have been cast and heads have rolled is remind people that they need keep in mind that the admins do what they do in a voluntary basis. The ranking system exists to benefit the users of the site b separating the really excelent from the really really really bad. There is plenty of good art in the middle and because of the ranking system it's possible for a good skin to be ranked 50 or so percent, it doesn't mean that it's deserved a "D" it only means that there were others that surpassed it and that it was better than a whole bunch of other ones. So when you've got a problem with a ranking or a review delt out by a admin it might be a good idea to stop and think about all the work that these guys put into ranking the skins that are submited on a daily basis and try to be nice when you place your complaint. . .if you feel one rater is being unfair I suggest you contact someone else in the staff and they'll look into it for you. There is no need in having these mudslinging fests.
well no, its always good to hear other peoples opinions. several of us are working on getting things straightened out and fixed. believe me, we're no happier at all the complaints and frustration. I'm getting my ass kicked irl by school and work, and stuff, but i'll have some stuff written up tomorrow about what is going on, and what is going to be happening.

Everyone is here on this board together, and its totally ludicrous to see how antagonistic and angry people are getting. Excluding the blatant trolls, we're all people here, it is possible to hold an intellegent conversation without getting into pissing matches. If you wanted to help, this isn't the manner in which to do it. the only way to make a community better is to stick around and make it better. taking potshots from boards on other websites is the absolute -opposite- of constructive criticizm and assistance.

"Reasoned" and "well-managed" are just as ill-justified as the term "better" was in your other post. As I see it, the only unreasonable aspect of sites like customize.org is that they provide people with a medium to submit and experience art within an easily accessible framework WITHOUT charging any money for it. It's also well-managed enough that everyone who wants to upload and/or download something can do so quite easily, since there is a clear and logical organization of the various categories in addition to a search engine.
Moreover, I'd rather visit a site that has a contingent of inconsiderate misanthropes who post some nasty comments that are obviously ridiculous and not worth anyone's time, than visit a site run by people so pretentious and self-righteous as to assume that their site is the standard by which all other sites ought to be judged. If you want reasoned discussion, a prerequisite is not presenting your opinions with the air of an omniscient authority who deigns to make superficial criticisms of a site you claim to want to improve, thereby ironically contributing to the very "negative" atmosphere for which you are purportedly too mature.
jafo..i'd like to point out that i do not want to belittle or underestimate your role in the skinning community because i believe you're valued and helpful, but your comment and the general attitude in which it was conveyed struck a nerve with me. while i still believe admins should be people you can relate to and who express their thoughts and feelings (no matter how crudely it was expressed) and not people who are 'above' everything, i do respect you, i'm not going to hold a grudge or anything and uh....what else was i gonna say...i feel like i'm leaving something out. oh well..bed time.

i guess i'll just add, even though its really already been said, that every site has its assholes and its mediocre/bad ratings- thinking that moderation or admin expertise will stop them is ignorance. and i definitely dont share the detestment for miriku and his blah comments that some here do, because a lot of the time, there really is nothing to say. when the opportunity for a good comment or critique arises, just about all the admins here will meet it - but i think, because of bruised egos and such, we're asking too much of people. a good percentage of the wallpapers uploaded here are just people breaking in photoshop, or worse, paintshop pro for the first time, and i'm very sorry, but they are pathetic. i happen to consider myself a damned good rater, minus the occasional slip-up from time to time, but send me a picture of a ripped-off girl on a plain blue background that i have to rate, and i'll give it a goddamned two- letter word for a review too. i may just give it an 'n.' most submittters arent children, nor are they handicapped and in need of extreme praise for every strait line they draw, so no one should be expected to treat them as such. people need to advance their own skills before they can actually rely on any kind of constructive criticism to be of any help, anyway. learn to use photoshop.

Every site has its assholes, be it Custo or DevArt. Every site has its good people who'll take the time to explain their point of view or actually give you pointers on things you could improve and how they see it.
While I decided against uploading anything I do anywhere but on my own site in its own sweet time, I suppose people should expect to get the childish comments a lot more often than the intelligent ones. My experience has shown me this is how it goes. ~smirks~
