Expectations have gotten a lot higher. I could produce the same quality screenshots now that I have in the past, and it just wouldnt get the same response.
Another reason I think screenshots havent been as good is that there hasnt really been anything new in the way of screenshots lately. In the past, there has always been something "new", whether it be the once popular html menu, or a new hack or whatever.
awww sorry ere-mite i was just browsing through. well... looking through those screenshots kinda reminded me how much i love skinning. browsing through desktop screenshots on custo always gave me inspiration when it came to theming. you will NOT find another website with kick ass screenshots like custo has! seriously i looked. I know it's the summer time and people are enjoying the weather so it's slow right now. that's cool. but it's not over. we'll find new and better ways to customize. it all a matter of time. i just wanted to remind you guys that we still rock when it comes to skinning. hopefully for any of you who care and enjoy this as much as i do, you wont give up. especially not after cutso did all these fancy updates to keep us happy! oh yeah, i'de still drool over your desktops mr. froastedflames even if it where the same shit in a different color!
there is a lot more that people can do, they just don't do it because, gasp, it's really hard.
i agree with aero whole heartedly. furthermore, some of those shots are just kinda crappy. one of them even has magic pink showing... what's up with that.
just so everyone knows i was just browsing through the screenshot and picking some out. there are many more just as good if not better that aren't up there. i didn't pick and choose a person so don't bash me if your not up there! please ;)
thanks for a shouts heylove. summer has been pretty busy for me... so many times i boot up style builder/reshacker/etc and then just close it because im so exausted from work and play ;p ... i've had this damn theme for almost three months (a record in my book)... i guess it's time for a new look :)

What happened is that thereīs more responsebilty for me than the last years. You have your work, your financial stuff. Itīs time to stand up earlier when itīs dark. I come here and have a look at the new submissions, brush my teeth and then go to work. It has nothing nothing nothing to do with creativity or anything related. i cannot hear music there. So i am coming back home, tired from nothing. I come here to have a look at the new submissions and to check my deviantart account. Thatīs how i did the last 10 months. Since 3 weeks i am on vacation and the first day it started i thought i will learn how to work with flash, dreamweaver ... yeah yeah. I have time now. Garbage. I donīt have time. Yeah.. i miss the nights during the week i sat here and recolored and modfied winamp skins and websites to wallpapers. Now i am tired when the sun goes down and think about other things than customize and 4efx. I donīt know where my motivation is gone. For myself i am stuck and there is nothing that brings me to open up photoshop or to try a new program. I more wonder how i will do next month and whoīs going to come up with relationship problems or financial, insurance or whatever. "Just do it" i think and do what they want from me. But when itīs time to put the papers away (if i finally started to work or just do this stuff) i sit there and think .. okay. Now you have time. But there was nothing the whole day that was running through my head like i used to do last year or in 2002. itīs empty and i sit there watch the trees outside and listen to the same music as last month. but to change something.. equal how dumb it sounds. i donīt even want to anymore.
its almost ironic, you in my eyes are seen as almost "elders" of custo. you're the ones we (upcoming, developing and next generation artists) are browsing the archives, forums, submissions picking out what you have done, appealing, criticising and adding what we see to our emerging skill-base. the custo community revolves much like any other cycle whereby we are left with the inspiration of those who were before us, and to be quite frank this cycle is a very short one. if anything, what needs to be done here is a knowledge base needs to be developed by established artists (you know who you are) to privide tips, tutorials, step-by-step instruction, inspirational twork as well as the projects already done. i guess ultimately it comes done to, is it worth it, will anyone benifit from it. look into the eyes of the next generation, there should be your inspiration, your cause.
i personally think it shouldn't matter if you use reshack or not, i mean i thought this place was about showing off what you can do and what you like. sitting around here and bitching about how people can and can't do things isn't solving the fact. putting people down on thier screenshots because they didn't do something (and don't say that none of you don't, it's quite obvious and easy to tell that you have at least once) is just going to neglect them from learning reshacker because nothing is ever good enough for you. we are all unique and different and i think 84% of this community can't except that.
I mean, you people (custo users) seem to have more flames than a box of matches, and it's not because you 'have fun', most arguments are started by ignorance. I have yet to see some sort of civilized argument of points. instead, everything is ending with "f u i have been here for 3 years go away newb" etc.
the young(er) skinners are now most likely exepriencing more responsibility such as college and starting to have to pay bills and shit
the old(er) skinners are going through life now, maybe job changes, and things involving family and bills.
everyone eventually tones down on their hobbies and do them less and less because as you progress in age, people find themselves having to do more and more things involving the real world.
As it shows, this is what is most likely happening to custo, just as imrik stated, he has way more things to do that are keeping him busy other than skinning and graphic design.
So what, customize has lost a constant flow of works from the greats?
this is just a time of transition, soon enough we will have another c72, another sticboy, another imrik. People will come along soon enough and mirror the custo greats, just hold onto your pants and wait a bit.
i think capitalize has a point there. it seems like there was this large wave of 14-16 year old kids who came in and stood on the shoulders of shinter and tinomen and just started toying. and now we're all 19-21 and we are in college, working jobs, or doing both. some of us are in serious relationship with, gasp, females that want to have our babies in varying amounts. responsibilities like that are what change things around the site.
we just have to wait for the next wave of kids to spurt forth into the great ocean of trendwhoring. i give it five months.
Dogbert Customize.org is a skinning, themeing, customizing community. whatever you want to call it.
it's all the same. for the most part everything we talk about, submit and even flame about is
about skinning. this isn't a place where you take a screenshot of your whatever visual style is
popular this week, wallpaprer and default windows icons, submit and expect people to kiss your
ass and tell you what a good job you did. if you submit something like that with out putting
any effort into it what so ever to a place like this where we do nothing but skinn, expect
criticism. you should expect it anywhere you submit something not just here. some people will like it some wont and they're going to let you know. that's life deal with it. if criticism doesn't make you motivated enough to go back and try harder then maybe this isn't for you. most of the valued members on customize will not criticize you in way that will make you feel uncomfortable but they will let you know what it is that people around here expect and will even offer to help you out. 90% of the time the trolls are the ones with the harsh words and starting the flames. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to point them out. that's just the way it is if someone can't except it then this is obviously not the place for them.
oh man, yesterday was my two year anniversary since i register this account. /me tears up. :P actually ive probably been here about three years seeing as this wasnt the first account i had here.
There are still good screenshots around here, but there are also quite a few newbies, judging by all the new names, and perhaps judging by the ratings that are lower than usual. Give them some time. Wait a while. Let them improve their skills and get used to Custo's standards - or rather, the standards of this site's most talented people who set the curve, such as yourself. ;-)
This isn't really a problem. If you're starving to look at beautiful things, however, take a walk in a forest in your area and enjoy the outside world. Talk to Imrik - he'll show you the way.

LTD your totally misunderstanding the point. this whole thing was to remind people around here that we as in the members of customize.org top the charts when it comes to skinning. if you noticed some of those shots where new and some where old but they all at one poing where jaw dropping. it's cac also give the "newbies" a chance to see what where capable of and give them a little inspiration. now is there anything wrong with having a little confidence? i didn't think so... :p i wasn't trying to be opinionated i tried to make that clear earlier in the thread.
heylove: i"ve read over your reply to my little banter and quite simply i've heard it hundreds of times from thousands of people. the sort of people who say 'that is life deal with it' are the people who actually need to look at life. everyone can change thier life, some people don't want to, others do and can't, and others do and won't. those are the three types of people in the world, and they will never agree on anything.
and back to submitting, what if I like my standard marlett? what if i'd rather show you how I combined a few explorer menu items and also was able to run an application from the desktop right-click menu? I guaruntee someone (not a troll) would point ot the marlett. Quite simply all of you people disgust me 89% of the time. This is how and why. I like to show off my minimalism with geoshell, and I know that isn't wanted here or anywhere but geoshell.org, because it's not 'true customization' or something like that. for fuck's sake, i took the initiative to risk a OS re-install and numerous registry entries must be modified to get a decent appearance on it, and all you can say is "what is up with the default recycle bin icon" as if a truck went by your house and you wondered what the smell was.
sorry, more banter. I think i'll just go to devart where effort to please the self is taken better than effort to please the community. But that doesn't mean I won't come back once in a while to giggle and laugh at how wierd colussus is :D

dude... calm down what are you getting all worked for? i said this before and i'll say it again this is a skinning community. so if you submit a screenshot that does not have every little thing down to your recycle bin icon customized, yes someone will point it out. and so what if they do. let that be a lesson learned. you'll know what to expect next time. if your willing to submit something knowing that people are going to review it and rate it you should expect and except criticism with a smile. again like i said before if you can't except the way it is this is probably not for you.
