he may be referring to his shell32.dll in which case replacer should work correctly... what error message are you getting?

like I said before zorlac, download stylebuilder 2.0 beta and it will fix that problem for you. I've done it myself and I will correct the issues you are having.

would it be possible to unregister the shellstyle.dll currently in use, reboot, then replace it? regsvr32.exe //u "C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\shellstyle.dll" is the command for unregistering a dll, but don't do anything unless you know what's going to happen. messing with system files can be really dangerous, so it's best advised to save the old file with a new name, set up a system restore point, and then try to do something like this. best of luck.

I just did this. Stylebuilder did nothing for me. However, Stylebuilder comes packaged with ResBuilder, which I use to replace the images in the files. ResHacker is used to change the colors in the file. You can do this even with an active shellstyle, provided you don't have any explorer windows open (or other things like the Control Panel).
I can go into more detail if need be. If you are creating your own, use ResBuilder to replace the bitmaps, and then use ResHacker to change the colors. If you are replacing a shellstyle from a particular VS, change to a different VS, then simply overwrite the file. There is no file protection on a shellstyle that isn't being used.
