Photoshop question

Alright, I have a photo of a car that is bright red. I want to change the colour to white, while retaining all the sharpness, shadows, and lighting that is on the car. I've tried to adjust the hue, but there is no white, it seems. I tried to use the colour replacement tool, but when I choose the foreground colour (replacement colour) to white, it simply paints over in a shade of gray. The other colours seem to work fine, but no white. I tried playing around with the brush tool, adjusting luminosity, lightening and such, but that simply dulls the colours and makes the car look like a pink blur.

So, any ideas? I'd appreciate any help :-)

I have Photoshop CS (8.0) and ImageReady CS, running on XP.

try making a mask/selection around the car, put it on a new layer. clear everything but the car. go to select>colour selction, move the eyedropper over the most red part of the car. click ok. you should have a selection of all the reds of the car. I hope that works anyway :\

Theres also the greyscale option...

a quick&dirty way is to just select the car itself (using the lasso tool), desaturate it (Image>Adjustments -- turns it greyscale basically) and the tweak it's Levels. I dunno if that's too basic for you or if it will give you your desired results.

Of first of all, of course the hue has no white...black and white are not colours. To get some brither colors...well you play with brightness but here you will loose all details and shadow. The is no simple way to do it...but if you can put it somewhere, I will do it for ya..

Well, thanks for the thoughts, people, I appreciate it. Yes, I figured that white is not a colour, but still, I have a $600 program that can't easily turn an object white. Blows my mind. But after all, it does other wonderful things, and in ther hands of a true artist it can work miracles.

Thanks for the offer, Imayan, but I have nowhere to put it, and I won't bother you with it. You guys did give me a few ideas, though, and I'll put em into action.

Thanks again :-)

I'm not sure how intelligent color replacers are, as far as tolerance goes. I would say your best bet might be replacing the palette. It would be time consuming, but a bit easier to do than color-replacing each individual color. That is, cut the image down to 256 colors - this shouldn't lose much. From there, you can replace the reds in the palette with associated whites, since they are probably in some order of brightness anyhow.

Shit, I don't know if this'll sound familliar to anyone, cuz i can't think of the name of the prog., but you'd load up a picture and select a color in the picture. You could then replace that color in the picture with any other color you choose, and it will automatically change all the other colors proportionally to the color wheel (or some shit like that, I never fully understood it) but if the only main color of the car is red (with shading here and there) then you should get the desired results with the prog....

-_-;; sadly I don't remember the name of this program... it was a simple write-in feature to MS paint.

image- adjust- hue sat.
on the drop down list, select red.
very very low sturation.
high lightness. or you can have the lightness as is and just adjust it later using some other color correction tool.

you can also try selective color.

also keep in mind that even if the car is white, there will be shades of other colors in there (e.g., there'd be some green reflection from tree leaves, etc), so adjust as you deem necessary :)

WOW Giraffe, that looks good. Better than what I managed. How did you do it, exactly?

You know that's always the difficult bit.
I just had a fiddle about in photoshop and it kind of worked.
But when you try to trace your steps again it never quite comes together a second time.

First off with the lassoo tool select only the red parts of the car. Leave out the windows, bumpers & wheels.
Copy that section to a new layer.

Hide all but the red body layer and Ctrl+select the Blue Channel and fill with 100% blue in a new layer, Set blend mode to colour and opacity to 50%.

Hide all except the red body layer and Ctrl+select the Green Channel and fill with 100% Green in a new layer above the body, Set blend mode to colour and opacity to 50%.

Next desaturate the Red body and adjust curves biased toward white.

That should do it.

That could be easily fixed (the red reflections). It looks pretty cool now, and I think that's a damn good job.

Yeah the bumpers need a little work but I was just trying out a concept, and it only took about 7 minutes.

Neat eh!

Good stuff. I have to get used to the idea of photoshop using layers. This aint MSpaint, for sure :-)

Well, you've given me a bit of an education here, and I'll give your technique a shot. Enfusion's idea worked alright too, mind you. . . . . this seems a little more white, though.

ok, ive figured it out for the most part. Duplicate the layer twice and mask the red part of the car the best you can. on the first layer bump the contrast just a hair and then use replace color to get a good white. then on the same layer set it for lighten. on the layer below, adjust your contrast and brightness as needed so that the shadows and details look good. oh, i almost forgot, the top two layers should be desaturated of course. Finally, on the top layer adjust opacity and fill as needed and or contrast. It may seem like a lot of work, but its not bad, i just did it on a pic of a red car i had and it took less than ten minutes and i looks pretty good.
