whats wrong with windows... it's free... wait is it ? i don't member buying it except when it came with the computer.. but that was windows 98, now i have 2000 and i don't member playing for it ;)
Basicly any of the unix based OSes. Probably your best bet. Especialy with WinE. Lets you run all your favorite win apps.
Then there is BEos, basicly a folded OS. But if you look I'm sure there ore places that still offer the free distro.
Last is, Mac OS X. When it came out a friend DLed it officialy from Apple. Some little loop hole in the GNU licence agreement says you have to have it freely available. Not exactly sure if they still have it out there, but can it hurt to look about?
Correct me if i'm wrong, but the complete OSX w\ Aqua GIU has never been free. I believe the core operating system, commonly known as Darwin, is. When you buy a boxed Mac OSX you do not really pay for the core OS, but rather the nice GUI and all those nice apps the Apple folks come up with. Darwin is open source and is loosely based on 4.4BSD.
If I'm wrong about this, feel free to tell me I'm dumb.

I do not recommend slackware for your first foray into linux. try lycoris, red hat, etc. Also you might want to try knoppix, it fit's on a cd and will let you boot into full fledged linux distro, complete with KDE3, and you never have to touch your hdd.

I can't hardly think of a distro that ISN'T FREE. I can think of several that you can buy with documentation and support, but also download isos for nothing.
Red Hat, fer instance.

HEY KURUPT908!!! if you are looking for a free OS to play around with get the BeOS PE5 MAX Edition (250mg) from bebits.com totally free. It can be installed just like if you were installing any windows application, it will be easier to learn than the easiest linux avaible and it will come with all kind of apps (dvd player, burner, mp3 player, image viewer, games, compilers, internet browser, email, FTP manager...) , it can manage windows and DOS files. And if one day you get tired of it you can delete it like uninstalling any app. Finally if you only want the OS stand alone ( basic apps) you can download the BeOS R5 Personal Edition and it only has a size of 50MG!!!!! this is the actual second OS I use in my computer.
