Ok, here's what i have. i built my own computer, its an ABIT motherboard, ATI Radeon 9700 pro, 56x CD-ROM, Mitsuko floppy drive, 120 gig seagate hard drive running Win 2000 pro from which i bought from my college.
The problem is i cant run one single game, well battlefeild 1942 multiplayer demo, but i cant even run DOOM damn it.
i would appreciate it if anyone new what the hell is going on with my computer.
Look, I know 2000 pro is a good product, but why didn't you buy XP?? Maybe you got a student deal or something. In any case, I can't imagine why you can't run games. Check your DirectX settings, and the vidcard setting in general. Make sure you are at FULL acceleration. How many games have you tried to run, exactly? Do you get an error message? What do you see happening when you try to run a game?? Give us some specifics and maybe we can help you sort it out.....
don't listen to LTD on the xp part. cuz xp sucks up resourses and is pure crap. good pick on win2k. the problem i think you have it either with the graphics card, or the games patches and stuff like that. gotta make sure every driver you have is compactible with windows 2000, and yah how many games have you tried to run ?
I dont know, gotta be a driver issue or something. If all the drivers are updated and working, try reinstalling windows. BTW I applaud you for going with 2k over XP.
ok..here's what i know i use xp, and love it over 2k, and don't see any noticable or hogging of major resources...it runs fine, and my computer still runs nice. 2k was not made for games. at all. it was designed for the business working environment, and henceforth runs games like ass. xp, however, was almost a combining of the 9x kernel and the nt kernel. it is built off the nt kernel, so it's more stable, and generally better, but they also included massive support for gaming and such. and the compatibilty mode if it still doesn't work. now, relative to your problem. i would get the newest ati catalyst drivers (3.2), get dx 9, make sure you have all the updates and so on, and make sure you meet the specs (sounds like you do)
XP is noticebly faster once you cross the 1 Ghz mark with 256 + mb RAM or thereabouts.
By the looks of your Videocard (powerful), there is no reason why you should not be running XP. It's basically Win2k with far more customizability, as well as Windows Compatibility Mode. It's optimized for gaming and BTW, the new versions of Office (2003) will run only on XP (so I hear - go to Hardwaregeeks.com and check the news section.) Apologies if I am mistaken.
BTW, give us some specifics, because you should be able to run virtually any game with the drivers you get with your vidcard . . .
And yes, this WILL eventually turn into an XP vs. 2k debate . . . :-) It's in our nature . .
I think that you should build me a computer like yours. :D Make it a spiffy blue tower though. I'm not too amazed with the silver tower. ;) Just kidding around with you, I think your new computer is perty.:). By the way, just be normal like me and get Windows XP Home Edition. ;) Wait, did'nt Brad give you the xp pro??? So cornfused.
okay so did you make sure you did all of the updates for it before you tried to play your games thats #1... other than that.. i have the same problem on BOTH os's xp pro and 2k pro... although things are a bit more stable on my 2k box... other than that you might wanna check your agp settings on the board itself... (and did you plug your vid card in?) those are 2 areas that my bud had issues witch oncerining that card/board problem

Thanks for the advice everyone. I picked Win 2k pro because i already had it in, no money spent, not that i have any. i have downloaded all the updates so far for windows.
LTD, I do have roughly a gig and a half of ram, and an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and windows service pack 3 fro 2K.
and as for Cowgirl up there, that is called pirating and BIG BILL will get you if you do that, like i care, and you cant update widows when you do that. I was tired and frustrated last night when i posted this topic and i needed help. I got to looking at my system and i think some of the device drivers might be a little off so i am checking that now
Since shocks asked, the games i have ran on it, or tried to so far are: C&C Generals, Supecar Street Challenge, Street Legal, DOOM, Battle field 1942 multiplayer demo, and Worms World Party. the only tow that worked were WWP and Battlefield 1942.
I got Photoshop 7.0 but I'm not that good at making walls and I'm a little poor on time, you know college life. Eat, sleep, go to school, look for a job, ya know.
Thanks LTD, but that is the reason i dont have XP, very big hole in my wallet.
I forgot to mention that I am using a HP M70 17" monitor, with a built in microphone and speakers, that I got from my old computer. And now I don't get any error messages, it just starts t he game and the black blank screen starts up but as soon as it does it goes back to windows. Yes i have tried ALT + Tab, does the same thing.
um, i thought i said that....but anway, you can windows update with a "pirated" os, that's just a big myth.. it sounds like you should be able to run those games, but like i said check the box and see if those games support 2k, because i know a lot of games don't because of the nt architecture used in 2k. (again, xp is a blend of nt and 9x, but heavy on the nt side)
arg gee mateys,I still think Bill will survive, since he is like the richest person in America. Wish I was his daughter$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :P Pirate on over.lol, just kidding.;)
I don't know what most of you are talking about with regards to Win2K and games. I have been running 2K since July of 2000 and (granted that it was designed for a business environment) there is nothing wrong with it's support for games. I have run the following games on it with no problem: 4x4 Evo 2, Empire Earth, Medieval: Total War, Driver, Motocross Madness 2, Starcraft, Simcity 3000, and a bunch of older games that I enjoy playing (like Monster Truck Madness 2, Diablo and Midtown Madness).
I have never had a single problem running any of these games. And, I'm not even on that great a comp (AMD Athlon 1ghz, 512MB PC133 RAM, Asus A7V133 mobo, Geforce2 GTS w/ 64MB RAM, SB Live!).
The only thing I do is check for Windows Updates once a week, and check for new hardware drivers every month or so.
By the way, you should give up windows and get Linux; tuxracer is such a great game :)

ok i think i figured out the problem. after checking drivers and stuff. I think it is my keyboard. i dont know what is doing it tho. i got generals and supercar street challenge to play by holding in ALT + Tab
I have all the updates for Win 2k so far. thank you to everyone for their advice and if you guys really care, i wil keep updating
by the way does anyone know of a free program that is like the equivalent of StyleXP for Win 2K pro?
shellwm is what most peeps use.. i had some problems with it.. but i think thats becuse its not multiprocessor aware... seems to work very well for all the others
glad to hear you got got your rig up and running btw :-)

thanks for the help everyone. i dont know what i did but i got it to work right now. i dont know what it was. its like it just needed to be broke in or something. but anyways thanks
Gosh! I hope someone can help me! I am running Win200pro and must have downloaded some kind of virus from God knows where! After 4 days of trying to repair the destruction myself I am on my son's pc now looking for answers to the damage I have unknowingly done to my machine. I reinstalled Win200 over the old for fear of losing drive contents with complete format. I went to copy contents from master to secondary and the Drag and Drop feature as well as Cut and Paste were not functional! Screwed there! I went to FTP drive to upload drive contents when that didn't work (feeling the desperation of working against time) and no network components were installed after installing Win2000 again! I am afraid that it's in the BIOS now! I have master and slave hard drives. Master is of course Win2000. I was getting error msgs with "svchosts.exe" and "tcphost.exe" ( or something like that) and also at boot I kept getting this Windows Installer pop-up trying to execute and install something. I checked under RUN in the registry and it was Microsft Synchronizer Manager. I had no control whatsoever over that even after continuous attempts at deleting it from the registry and deleting the files associated with the program! The files just kept popping back up in the system directory along with the registry being re-written with the Synchronization Manager keys! Everytime I tried to open Windows Explorer the Windows Installer would just pop up! It also popped up when I tried to open a few other progs (ie: Partition Magic) I took out the master Win2000 drive and put another one in from a Winxp machine and set it to master. The screen would get to the WinXP starting message and then would just reboot over and over again! It did it 3 times! After that I just said SCREWIT! and was close to just tossing the 120G drive out the front door! I can't afford to lose this expensive data because it contains FULL progs of Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, PSP, Macromedia and lots of DVD and music burning software. I have a home/business network set up and don't want to start a chain reaction! I don't know what other info anyone needs in order to be able to help me but I am hoping some kind soul with expert knowledge of Win2000Pro, BIOS, and viruses can help me with a salvage operation. I am at wit's end and need my machine (and the data on that drive for my job)
I am sitting back with head in hands waiting anxiously (lost all patience DAYS ago!) for some expert advice because someone told me that I could get it here!
try going to a forum that specializes in Windows help like annoyances.org. I am sure you'll find help faster at a place like that than at a customizing site like this.
