Heh, I used to have an IBM PC Jr, it had an infared keyboard, and an amazing 8 megs of ram.... I fried it when I was 7, I tried to upgrade the memory..... 'twas my first experience with a soldiering(sp?) iron... right now I'm using AMD Duron 700 runnin at 850 512 MB of ram 20 GB HDD 8x8x32 CDRW 12x DVD-ROM 52x CD-ROM Generic sound 64MB NVidea GeForce 2 MX KDS 17" CRT monitor generic optical mouse ($10 at a computer show, when optie mice just came out.... everything else was 'tleast $50 then....)
my dad's computer, that he's still using is a Pentium 120 (no, not even a pentium pro....) with 32 megs of ram.... creeping along runnin win98.... I don't know how he can stand it!
I work for the Chimacum School district in Washington State. Our district recieves hunderds of used computer donations every year.
We just got a shipment of: (politically speaking, we can't say no)
18, 17 inch Color monitors 4, 5 inch monotone bnc video monitors 18, x86 cpu's with no HD or extra ram. (built on 1 meg ram) 1, navy print lab, for printing high quality transfers for clothing. (that was combined in several very large boxes) and lots of matrix priters, typewriters, and desk lamps....
It's so nice that the local government cares so much about upgrading technology in the public education system.
To top this off, we recieved a Turbo Graphix 16 and an atari system with one controller and the only game was invader.
X86's ROCK! BTW, of everything donated, the only thing that worked was the Atari. The monitors worked to. I kept a couple.
You regard a computer with a 1.4 Ghz processor 'crappy'? My main work station is a 200 Mhz ultra sparc running OpenBSD. My secondary machine is a intel celleron 266 based system, running NT 5. Other computers I use regularly are an old Mac Quadra 950 (33 mhz processor - 40 mb of ram), and a few rack mounted old pentium systems. Did I mention that I once owned a vax? ...
Duron 900@1400 (10*140FSB) watercooled; 768 mb ram running at 150 mhz; 2*15 Gb in RAID0 using a Promise RAID card, 1*60 Gb and 1*20 Gb; Hercules 3D Prophet 2 MX 32 mb (soon to be replaced with the new Radeon); SCSI Plextor 8x20 CDR and IDE Hitachi DVD 8x; And old Sun CRT monitor rated 26" (it weight over 45 kg!) capable of running up to 2048*1536; Crappy 56k modem; Win2k+SP2+IE6.
I am typing this in Mozilla (minimum requirement pII 250 or so) on a p75. THis means that while I've already finished a sentenced and went to get some food, Mozilla is still busy displaying what I've typed, character by character.
p3 733 650 mbram 40gig gforce2 mx 64mbram 17'. p233 32 mbram 10gig ati 4mbram 15'. i guess thesecond one is crap. the frst one is still usable but i need better for work. wraybling 768mb ram is nothing when your into 3d modeling.
Actually, yea, it was supposed to be scarcastic. (the first post)
But like a month ago i threw away a 66mhz 250mb hdd 12KB RAM, no sound, and who the fuck knows how much video. I found it in the trashcan, kept the case, and the jumper caps, just about all that was good on it.
My other crappiest computer is a 450mhz 128mb ram 12gb hdd, 32mb video and 1x dvd.
i kind ahate to write my specs, but dont worry, i was once one of you ^_^
for 5 1/2 years i had a p166 with 2 gig hd 16 megs ram, rest built into the mobo. Worked okay for a time, but after two-three years it felt kinda small and got smaller and smaller compared to the others. Built in lots of stuff to it later on, an finally lacked just a couple of extra componenets, actually the most important, but whatever. Well, i bought the sepcial components and built JADE. Say hi:
heh, been using the good ol modem all my life with computers.
but i really think it was good to learn using comps on a generally crappy one, its easier to value what you havew then, to save every little byte for the neccessary, learn to use only the most useful progs in the most effective way, and ho to solve problems & crashes on a regular basis. Not to mention building, hardware in general & electronics
Wraybling, the more the ram you have, the less you complain with any program out there. I have 3 256 megs dimms on my Azza's () KT3ABX motherboard. Regarding processor power, please note that my cpu *should* run at 900... ;)
Penaduny, if you check the system registry (only if you know it very well, I won't consider myself responsible for any malfunctioning you may cause to your rig) and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, CURRENT VERSION and finally RUN, you'll find all the programs starting when Windows start. Feel free to contact me for any further questions.

holy shit, I just found my old 386 16 Mhz box! 4mb of ram, 64 mb hard drive, 16 color video at an amazing 640x480 resolution.... turned it on, surprisingly it still works.... and it had Windows 95 installed! takes an hour to get to the desktop, then when you click on the start menu, you might as well go take a nap, it's gonna be a while..
My primary web development box is a P133 with 64mb ram running FreeBSD. It is absolutely perfect; I would never think of upgrading it. Of course I don't actually use any form of GUI on it, just access it via telnet & such. I love that box.
I thought this would be of interest in this thread: Everyone who installs Counter-Strike v1.3 () gets a choice to add in their info, Valve is trying to get an accurate representation of what people are using.
My comp is Duron 600@800, 45 GB, 384 MB, 19", GeForce 2mx. My Dad had the 'first' PC but sold it on eBay since it was just collection dust in a box and is now a collector's item =)
