whats up with some of the older walls in the top 30...do you guys honestly believe that some of those belong there? I know that in their time they were quite outstanding, but come on.

i agree some of them are piss poor compared to some of the newer ones and thats the flaw with their dynamic ratings the older your wall is if its above the average rating it keeps going up and up and up

oh, 4k was the first wall I used from custo, it has a sentimental value for me =P....
I honestly belive that the wall section needs a cleaning and restructuration with so many wall is almost imposible to find anything. A good idea would be to arrange them in categories. it's a hard work, but it should be done...

Knuff raises a good point...color-based organization would be nice. Plus, I'd like a sort by resolution feature, be easier to find the right size. Or, even better, both! :D
Some, like 4K, are classics and inspired a lot of folks. 4K is 4 years old, and when I saw it, I had never heard of bryce, cause all you kids weren't file sharing back then, and everyone didn't have the ability to wank shit off every 5 seconds. 4K blew my mind back then, and it's a classic the same way an old song is, the same way anything that inspired people is.
Have some respect for the artists that were here and built this site long long long before many of you were on the scene.

ok I knew someone would mention the fact that some are "classics" and were inspirational...I get that. But does that always warrant such an exceptionally high ranking? Plus you can't deny the fact that some are just plain crappy...
dude...... there are 7198 wallpapers. Maybe you should try to just put any wall older then a year into a different catagory, and make a new catagory for newer walls.

Out of interest I just scoped through the first 100 or so wall's sorted by rank and I feel I must disagree with you Flashback. With the possible exception of this one - - which should be taken out into the parking lot and shot through the back of its head - I think the vast majority of them still look excellent. It's easy to see these walls now through weary eyes because, yes, any dick with a P2P'd copy of Bryce can churn out a bunch of reflective wank-o-torus's and they do infest every one of the six big skinning sites. However the walls that head up that list were the trailblazers - those walls are the ones that the zero skills chimps copied in endless colours for the last couple of years. They are proof positive that it is possible to be original and creative and innovative. In an era when every pleb and his mother are bashing out tedious gas-cloud-nebula-bryce-chrome-sphere-twinkly-star-microtexte d-arrowed bollocks, it's nice to be able to look back at the originals and realise just how far we haven't come.
Oh... and I'd just like to add that the tedious gas-cloud-nebula-bryce-chrome-sphere-twinkly-star- microtexted-arrowed bollocks that I myself produced is, of course, exempt from criticism.

You can organize by date, ranking, number of reviews, number of downloads already. We could break it into sections, and that's been discussed, but for various reasons it was nixed. Want to find the good walls? Admin ranking and number of downloads are the way to go. You may have to dig around, but at the same time you get to see more work.
well the fact that you can already put all the wallpapers in order by date and rating and what not is why I dont see why it would be that hard to make a New wall catagory and an older wall catagory.
I would also like to say something to EVERYONE at this site, admins and users a like. I have been on the internet for 6+ years, which though that is not a long time, I have expierenced a lot. I have seen a lot of 'free' servises come and go, and I have seen a terrible trend. You need to realize that we power each other. Customize.org would not be here with out everyone that submits and posts messages even looks at the damn site. Granted, we would also not be here if the admins and people in charge of the site put it up. So we wont look you in the mouth, and you dont look at us in the mouth, because as quick as you came you can go.

I don't look the users in the mouth, I spend a lot of time interacting with them and ranking subs. What I'm saying is because 5 or 6 guys suddenly decide they want tweaks to the search engine, we're not going to bust our tails overhauling it. It works, it isn't broken, so it's fine for now. This is a free site, and you don't pay for the downloads, so we aren't obligated or compensated to do anything. We're here for the same reasons as the you, because we're into digital art and customizing. The guys responsible for the back end def. have their hands full with a lot of stuff right now, and I'm sure they would just laugh if we asked them to do anything more.
We want customize to be as easy to use and as awesome as it can be for you guys, but stuff takes time .......many of the things you guys have said are on the massive ever growing "List of Things to Do" But this site is run by volunteers, and we have jobs and school and such that have to come first.
Right. i agree with you in every point. i see this site as an unbelievable inseprating place. i am going to school, too. so thereīs not much time for my pc. i a doing one or two hours a day. this site is free right? remember that! the search engine is impressive. easy to use stable. thatīs everything i need. secondly, i am going with the trend of time. so i am just looking at the new stuf... and if you use the engine right it will give you everything you need.
colossus I dont see the need to get worked up...we're just talking ideas here, and the fact that some of the older rankings need to be reconsidered. The whole point of this was, ok, someone mentioned 4k earlier...not to discredit it, it's a great piece and obviously hugely popular based on total downloads. BUT, is it really the second best wall we have at custo? Maybe, maybe not, but there are alot of others too that surely have been surpassed in terms of usability, composition, and technique. Thats the bottom line...and the only reason we're talking about changing the way the walls are sorted would be to add proper time context, so they would still hold their spot for their respective era.

And who's to say what's the best and what's not? Ranking exists just to get things into a somewhat hopefully logical order so you can search the database. It's all subjective and the admins are certainly not the ultimate authority on quality. What Max thinks is crap I might think is good......and vice versa. I personally think 4K should be number one overall.
Maybe someday you can sort by year, but I don't see how it's different than sorting by date. Did you read my "worked up" post?

My post was actually completely mis interupted. It was not ment as a threat to anyone, it was ment to show everyone that customize.org is a community like any other and we feed off of each other. Its a circle...........a circle of trust...lol ........thats the lamest thing i have ever said but its true. Whatever, right now I feel like my sig applies specifically to me.

I think constructing opinions based around how "high-tech" something is, or was, does a disservice to all involved. I think the 4K peice is a prime example of this; yes it was a technical feat in it's time, but what the hell does that mean today? Who the fuck is going to care in 20 years which peice had the most polys in a said week/month/year. Now even though I personally am not a big fan of that particular peice, I do not knock those that are; I just question their motives.
Ask yourself, if this was submitted to NeoCusto+++ 5, 10, or 20 years from now; would your opinion be the same? Like it, love it, I don't really care; just be sure you like it for what it is today, and what it will continue to be in the future, not for what it was. Render time will go down, number of polys/lightsources/etc. will go up; strong composition and 'good thought' will be around long after we're all dead.
