Satellite Modem

Ok, just found out that the DSL line to the place im moving is severed and wont be repaired for another 6 months, and cable isnt in my area, so should I get a satellite modem, or just stick with Dial Up, those are my ONLY choices.

Stick with dialup... until Cable or DSL is available. From personal experience; Satellite isn't worth all the aggravation and price that comes along with it.

What exactly was the aggravation and price?

What needs to be done.

Well.. when I had access to satellite internet access through satellite TV service, it wasn't very reliable and the price was double what we would have had to pay for DSL or Cable. If there's anything in your line of site to the satellite, you're shit outta luck... if it's raining you can count on inconsistant service and heavy fog is just as bad. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably hold out and deal with the woes of dialup, rather than throwing money down the drain on a satellite connection.

Unfortunately I can't agree with Attila. When I had Satellite I absolutely loved it. However there are a couple things to be aware of.

1. High ping times.

2. Occasional stalled DL's. Now when I say occasional I mean it would seem like nothing would DL for maybe 15-30 secs then the DL would continue.

I know I am going to get ripped for this one. This was with AOL's Direct PC service. At the time it was still in Beta in the area of the country that I was located in. Also I wasn't paying for it so I really couldn't complain about the cost. You may want to wait for more opinions.

[morph] sat is fine if you can handle poor ping time and if you can get 2 way sat, otherwise you still need a dial-up anyway. just wait for cable or dsl

only 6 months, not too bad. jsut stick with dialup for a while. i dont' knwo what the prices on satelight are, but it seems like there should be some sort of installation fee and stuff that just isn't worth it. i know some people who have had satellte connections and they were a lot less than satisfied with the preformence

Satellite seems to be pretty bad from everything I've read about it. Inclement weather disturbs the connection (anything getting in the way from the modem to the satellite). The price is sky high, man, I would never pay for that, even if I could afford it. $60+ a month? Ouch!

Regardless, it does have awesome DL speeds I hear. I would just wait for DSL. Cable kicks DSL's ass (or at least the time I used DSL, then switched back to my lovable Cable) in terms of speed and reliability (I was on Qwest DSL, on Excite@Home right now). Hope this helps, I would just get on NetZero and get something to kill the banner ads.

Ive got sprint broadband, it uses a satelitte. I pay only $40 a month, compared to the $50 for cable in my area :/ Weather has NEVER inturrupted my internet connection and I never have any trouble with my connections. I d/l at about a average of 60kb/s all the way to 300kb/s. But I do get high pings when playing online games, thats the only thing that sucks. If you could get cable or anything else I would reccommend it over Sat, but if you cant Sat is 9999 times better then mode, I would go with it.

I highy recommend that you DO NOT get satellite at ALL. I would just wait for DSL just like everyone has pointed out, its to much trouble I had Half-Duplex and it was alright for about 1 month and then the signal would die and come back and die. I then signed up for 2way($400) and same problem! I guess its not AVAILABLE IS IT NOW! :-)

If it makes you feel better, in Australia, that would be a good price. The cheapeast cable (I know of) here is $65 on contract.

As for the problem at hand, ring up the DSL provider and whinge every single day until they get that sick of you that they fix it earlier. It might not make things get fixed any quicker, but you would be able to vent your frustration at the poor person that answered the phone each day. :o)
