on the subject... maybe a little off... i can't seem to partition my 30 gig hard drive. i want to partition it so i have about 23gigs/7gigs, without losing data (non-destructive partition)... i've used about 15 gigs already, so i defragged to get all the used memory at the front. but it still won't let me partition. after partitioning it says i'm missing some .dll files when i reboot on the larger partition.
this may be confusing and off-topic, but any help is appreciated. maybe it has something to do with the swapfile (?)... i'm a newb to this drive space stuff. //swear to bob
What I did was I got a new hard drive. formatted the entire thing, made 2 partitions, a 11 gig, and a 25 gig, and installed xp on both, gonna format the 11 gig one soon and put linux on it though.

o geez... win98 on one, 98 on the other, a mac SE (yeah i know, just don't comment) and a mac 2fx ... pathetic, aint it... i really dunno the OS that's runnin on the macs
to OddFox and Defect: if you ask me, you're better off with 98SE, its a bit faster then ME and alot less buggy, and its got most of the same features. in gaming circles its known as the best OS for that sort of thing.
Ambient.Impact: We was talking about Running Half-Life on Linux, So unless Bill Gates secretly put some Slackware code into Windows 98, then Windows 98 doesn't apply to what we were talking about at all....And actually, I get higher framerates on XP then I do on 98 SE, plus XP doesn't crash (hasn't crashed on me in the Two Years I've had it)
Windows 98SE == Best for medium-low end machines (Myself)
Windows ME == Best support with minimal performance problems for medium machines (Myself)
I prefer Windows ME because it gives me much less grief than 98SE and my computer is fast enough to not notice any performance degredation, if any.
And Defect, you have to go through more trouble than I'm willing to in order to get Half-Life to run with WINE, and even after you get it running, there are known glitches, and the performance is a little lower than in Windows.
Somewhere I have heard this before In a dream my memory has stored As a defense I'm neutered and spayed What the hell am I trying to say
Well, I run a network at work built on Red Hat linux. At home i have 3 partitions with Lindows(Linux stability and Windows ease of use)(). I just recently bought a iMac for video editing and so far it is the best.
markmsahwneh: You should check out Xandros if you want to use a distro with Window's ease-of-use and Linux's great flexibility and strength. Lindows as a company is just way to childish/stupid if you ask me.

XP Home (I want Pro though), skinned with Milk and Snow E2 stuff. WinXP is a great OS, and as much as we love to hate MICRO$oft, they really nailed it with XP. I can customize to my heart's content, mess with .dll and system files, you name it. Very tweakable, too. If and When OSX is ported to PC, I'll really consider using that . . LOL, but that won't happen in the near future :-))
