haven't used photoshop in a while....look and see if you have a gradient tool. if so, you *should* be able to make a customized gradient. (or change the color of an existing gradient scheme)

make a new document at 1024x768 @72dpi or whatever...make new blank layer, use the circle tool. Make circle to desired size, go to edit>fill>black or choose any color. Then go to your erase tool and choose a big brush like 300 and run it across the side of the circle, while the circle is still highlighted. You can conrol the desired erase by trying various attempts, command z to step back, and try again until desired effects. After each eraser attempt you can go to edit>fade eraser to desired percentage also. blah, blah, blah,...hope that helps,....it's only one way of many ;)

if you have a recent photoshop then a graident selection should be Forground to Transparent. Just fill it with that or something. Or add a mask and fill it with a normal black>white gradient

how bout use the marquee, then fill it with a gradient. to control gradient transparency, use the top sliders.

if you want a shape that can't be made with a normal marquee, then use one of the lasso tools.
