I've been noticing that alot of people have been ditching XP back to 2k, is there any specific reason for this? From what I understand, XP can do everything 2k can do unless you have Advanced Server or DataBase, fill me in on whatever it is that I am missing, many thanks :)
i love my xp, i wont be switching to 2k again anytime soon, more than likely its because xp requires 128mb of ram and it runs slowly on others PCs but it runs like slick 50 on mine

I'm considering changing back to 2k, because it's easier to customize a few things plus XP adds alot of things that I don't really need. XP seems want to run alot of things in the background and take up valuble resources (you can cut alot of them off in administrator tools/services, but it still leave some stuff in the background), which 2k isn't that bad about doing.
But I'd like to hear other peoples opinion on which is better :)
the one thing that annoys me most about XP is when browsing a folder with a lot of executable files it takes forever to load the icons, and scrolls very slowly. it doesn't do this in 2k. anyone know what's up with that.
When I select a (unfinished dl) .avi file in explorer my hd goes like crazy, and then after a while it finally displays the file information. I can't rename/move/delete the file before that stops, because it's in use. This sucks and only occurs in XP. I heard this was a common problem and there was a fix for it, but I can't find anything... :P
the new xp media player patch states that microsoft has the right to install and run other programs on your computer in order to enforce digital copyrights. as soon as the first time anything like that happens, i guess i'm gonna go get me a linux wireless card and say goodbye to fallout tactics . . .
The only reason I see for using XP is the new icons.. every thing else seems like win2k. I like it simple so, I have turned everything off so it behaves like win2k.
As for stuff running in the background, XP installs alot of unuseful stuff for you, but win2k does this aswell.
Another reason for changing back to win2k is the new media player. The skinning this REALLY slows it down. Try running mplayer2.exe instead and you have the good old media player :)
Well anyway, I would go back to win2k if I didn't have to install all my programs again.
Please reread what I write earlier drai, I said you can cut off a good bit of services, but there are still a bit in the background which are vital for XP to run that you CAN'T cut off.... I'm not sure, but I don't believe that 2k has quite as many vital processes in the background
chavoits a registry hack. spark up regedit, go to hkey_classes_root\.exe. have a look at what the default key value is (should be exefile). now go to hkey_classes_root\exefile\defaulticon (assuming the default above was exefile). change the default there to something not %1. not sure if you can have a blank string. maybe put in the path to a generic icon?. usual disclaimer if this fucks your system, don't blame me. playing in the registry can be dangerous.
fuck it ate my backslashes. whats up with that? second try spark up regedit, go to hkey_classes_root\\.exe. have a look at what the default key value is (should be exefile). now go to hkey_classes_root\\exefile\\defaulticon (assuming the default above was exefile). change the default there to something not %1
do you have any of the extra stuff displayed? like version number, etc? if not, then yah, no idea. Maybe they've changed the way the icon cache works in XP, finally, to try and stop people's caches becoming irreparably (sp?) corrupted. I had the ultraedit icon as my shortcut overlay on and off for a few months due to issues with the icon cache :)
