I've been through the lolly shop: fvwm, windowmaker, afterstep, icewm, openbox, fluxbox, blackbox, scrotwm, awesomewm, razor-qt, gnome 2.xx, gnome-shell, xfce and KDE 3.xx and 4.x.
Eventually settled on openbox, awesomewm and KDE 4.8. Openbox is the good all-rounder, awesome is great when building packages and KDE for general browsing.
