Need some help with the simple task of reshacking shell32.dll. Windows just keeps replacing it back
|
Hello. I really need some help in customizing my shell32.dll, since I've tried several ways to reshack it with no success (apparently). My path to current failure is the following: 1.- Copy C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll to Desktop 2.- Open ResHack and change icongroup 4 (the folder icon) with a folder icon i got from some icon pack. 3.- Save the reshacked shell32.dll to folder C:/Lab/ 4.- Used ModifyPE (with -c parameter) to validate the checksum of the reshacked shell32.dll 5.- Deleted C:/windows/system32/cache/shell32.dll and replaced with reshacked shell32.dll 6.- Used "replacer" to replace C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll with C:/Lab/shell32.dll (reshacked one) 7.- Restarted Windows 8.- Used Reshack to open C:/windows/system32/shell32.dll but the icongroup contains the original icon, no the reshacked one.
Note: I haven't disable the WFP yet... but I hope there is some other way. I set the automatic updates to manual (not disabled).
I really want to change my icons so i can finally go back to litestep.
If someone could give me a bulletproof way to make it work, or fix some of the steps i took.

why do you not just use an application like icontweaker to change your icons? especially since you only want to change the folder icon - as far as I understood.

it's not possible using litestep afaik.

it doesn't work. I'm currently using iconpackager.. but when using litestep, those tweaks don't work. The only possible way is by reshacking shell32.dll (I want to change all the icons (eventually), but for starters, my test with only 1 icon doesn't work. Any ideas?

Doing steps 2, 3, 6, 7 works for most people, but the rest should have no effect at all ... are you sure replacer works? Was the file in system32 replaced before you rebootet? Did you read the docs for replacer and do you have the latest version? Does a windows "Do you want to revert to the original file?" Dialog come up? If not, do you have a XP in your cd drive?

After doing step 6.. i try to open the file.. but shell32 hasn't changed. I downloaded the last stable version of replacer. I think the only thing i might be missing is windows scripting host 5.6 (which is weird, since i keep my windows up to date). Windows does not show the dialog after reboot. And i don't have an XP CD in my drive. I appreciate your help so far THC4k. I'm going to try to download WSH... hope it helps. Any other suggestions?

I just checked that I do have WSH 5.6 so... it won't help me. I guess something is preventing replacer to work... any suggestions??
bye!

it should display the dialog after replacing. It would ask you to insert the XP CD so the original files can be replaced. I guess, since it does not ask, it has access to the XP CD and restores the file instantly? Got that CD in your (virtual) drive?

nope that is not the case. i guess replacer it is not working properly, since it seems it is not replacing correctly shell32.dll (following your suggestion I checked it after the replacement, and it didn't actually change. So... if you have replacer maybe you could send it to me [carloshurtado at gmail] if you are not too busy. It is weird... something is preventing replacer to work... no clue.
