yesterday i thought some time about this website and the time i shared with it´s users. I found people to work with and got a lot of inspiration from them and others. Of course there are other sources of inspiration. But i can´t deny Customize is one of the first and big ones.
What i currently see is that a lot of different groups start new websites, new blogs, new forums. And there are so many good starts and ideas behind those scenes.
For example the Mire suite. It has a lot of potential and was open to everybody. Different groups and people worked on it. And a big package of skins, icons and wallpapers came out.
And i know that we all collect experience and grow up. Why not make something out of it? Why not get together and build something on a great base that is already there? Why not use it instead of building up that base as a new everytime?
Invite skinners and artists you like to this place. I´m really happy to see some Winamp5 skinners recently. There are such great programs which have a great potential. Together with the knowledge around here we could work on them and improve them. Like the foo_looks gui. Why not ask if we can get together with the original creator and update it to be compatible with the new foobar? Why not get together and use the great knowledge of litestep we have around here?
This is just my thought. Doesn´t mean it´s a fact. It´s just my point of view and i would like to know what you think about it.
i'll bet fractal.design and split could do something amazing together, with split's ideas and graphical abilities, and all of fractal's crazy themes and lua black magics
It would be nice to have foo_looks updated. Even though i use foo_looks on my oldie foobar (0.8.3) it would be nice just to update it, even though i have heard that the newest foobar isnt really different than the older foobars. But, i am positive that if foo_looks was compatible with the new foobar every single foobar user would give it a try. Alot more foobar skins could be created and shared and we foobar users might convert a few winamp users to foobar.
hmm never actually tryed foo_looks but just did something similar...
this is done using panels_ui and dockable panels components once you get the hang of panels_ui there's only few limitations to what you can do when positioning things well the only thing foobar is lacking at the moment is a skinformat that can be installed like a winamp skin...just by double clicking...but who knows when time comes...
back to topic, are you suggesting to make a customize.org suite?
I read the post. But it was late and I wasn't entirely sure what you were proposing Imrik... Especially lost on the fourth paragraph from the top.
But are you suggesting a custo suite? Or just that we help this community grow by getting more skinners and such over here?
Because that seems quite possible. We could recruit the (talented) gems over at dA to come over here. :D It's already begun... And then phase out the non-talented people, or help them and make them better. And become the elitest website that ever did come...!

I agree with pyro here, don't really understand what you're trying to get at. What I got out of that is there's all these people creating new groups and that instead of creating these groups, we should just all work together as a community. Rather, instead of branching off and doing our own thing, make customize.org the new group so to speak. One large community suite of sorts, maybe.
Wonder if that's what you meant, probably not though :P
i think he's more getting at trying to keep people around and improving custo even with groups popping up. like, people start here, then join or start another small group of skinners and leave custo behind. buuuut that's just my take on imrik's post.
i know that i'm always happy to see people growing and evolving and groups being made and putting out works. but i'm also really excited when groups like the guys at gsm or 4imp put out works and release here as well and enrich the community with their sheer awesomeness.

back on track: i'm lost too with what marius really meant, but i really like a great suite open to anyone who wants to join, just like GSM does. and with that said i just can add

But yeah I think Cap and Fen are right, that's what I was trying tot put together, but I guess I had failed. I suppose it's right, we should stick to what started us, not create new groups and forget about Custo.
Also the last thing I want is for Custo to die off. We do need to build up the community, and (refer to my lost post) not let it become like the other place...
hope to see sooner the thing about the foo cfgs with double-click installation, as aMADme points ...or at least a colorizer component, as the plugin for winamp usable with the "new" skins

Imrik, it is awesome that you are trying to create this movement. There is already so much talent here, and by working together even more we can reach new levels of creativity and innovation. I think this is already happening, as threads like this show.
Hopefully it goes without saying but you have Steve and my full support. With EVO, we now have a lot of the tools in place, such as groups and the wiki. There is still lots of improvements to do (there has been so many excellent suggestions), but I think that is beside the point. This is about the community.
How do we get this movement going?
With a Custo suite?
By all of us encouraging our friends and favorite artists to submit here?
A contest to get the wiki going full tilt?

Capitalize got most of the points i thought about. Although my primary reason why i wrote this post was to make you think and write answers - as you did. I wanted to get people together. I looked through different galleries and found such great themes, mockups and ideas. So i wanted to ask you what you think about my thoughts and that idea of getting together to improve litestep themes or update software with their original authors.
So not necessarely doing a custo suite. But that would be such a project. As for me i am done with exams and papers in the end of june and i already have some works which just need to be retouched and finished. And with those works as a base i will talk to some people about litestep themes and winamp skins and other additions.
As I have mentioned, over to GSM we're sloooowly looking into ideas for another suite. This project is open to anyone who wants to be in on it, especially custo folk.
The problem with very large "community" type projects is ultimately organization. The basis of the first suite was the look and feel of the site itself, which made it easier. We're having a little more trouble starting from scratch, so any input is appreciated.

I do really like the idea of this and the direction it's going in. And I would like to participate in it. But now I'm not sure what I could do since I'm on Vista.

What if we take this idea a step further. I know in Toronto, and probably where most of you live, there is a huge push this year to raise awareness on global warming. Live Earth will take place on July 7th with 9 concerts on 7 continents with 100+ musicians.
What if our community raised awareness in our own style? If there is support, we can figure out how it should work (the GSM suite and Desktopography come to mind). Its quite convenient that nature wallpapers and earth tones are in style right now. It might be harder for skins to give a message, but even if the artist's comment said a stat (or it included a special badge), I think it would make a difference.
Tab mentioned organization is a problem with a large project. I am definitely willing to take the responsibility.
So, its just a question of whether there is enough support from the community -- are you in?
I'm %100 in! I was just contemplating doing an awareness desktop like just yesterday which is funny. AND I'm one of those crazy nature/animal lovers. (And I say crazy because I'm a step away from doin' the chainin' one's self to a tree or "freeing" animals. o.O)
k, but the idea behind captain planet or something along those lines allows us to, as fractal said, create various substyles according to the elements. i'm not saying we cant do it with the others but man, captain planet is awesome.
whatever ends up happening, the group name should be an open-ended one so that it can be used for future projects like this. as for suite names fitting this...why not something like "suite:earth"?
Those people need to actually organize, as in list who's volunteered to do what and when they plan to complete it and periodically check back and see how every individual is doing.

Thomax, yes, I am definitely up for organizing :) Tab, did you mean a couple people in addition to me? Because having actual artists help lead this certainly would help things go smoother.
Good brainstorming so far... for the title, I'll add something simple like "The Live Earth Project". Fenris' "suite:earth" is catchy. "Captain Planet" is fun but seems kinda specific. Keep 'em coming :)
so...theme = earth (courtesy of lamp's suggestion of global warming awareness); organizers = lamp, thomax, dustkt...? my vote is that the end date should not be prior to the end of august. as tab keeps suggesting, we should figure out who will be in charge asap. then we should probably start a new group and invite the community to join and contribute.
i'm willing to help organize...i may put something out..dunno...let's do this!
