Sitting down and mashing the refresh botton at work, doing like I always do... nothing, I noticed... everytime I hit refresh a view is added... I tried it for like 2 mins. It couldnt be that every single time I hit refresh someone was viewing my screenshot...
Why this? Why not registre people IPs to count the actual numbers of views not number of clicks?
I don't know why that is. I found that out too when I viewed stuff more than once like I usually do. It just always adds to the views. But just sitting there a refreshing isn't good...
It's "How many times has it been viewed?", not how many people have seen it. (Assuming you're not AFK and using something like Opera's "Reload every...", etc.)
I think changing it to IP views is just expecting the worst from everyone, because at the rate of things, someone might actually sit there and refresh just to say they have more views. Counting clicks to that page is difficult to implement (and impossible to track views from external websites).
Downloads works in the same way, counting the number of times the file has been requested for downloads. There's no reasonable way to count the number of times it's been fully downloaded, and it's reasonable to say a person can download it more than once.
Counting by a per member basis would require everyone to register.
If it's accuracy you're trying to strive for, then even the IP method won't be a perfect number, but do you really care anyway?
mailmerge pretty much nailed it. From a technical perspective, the list of IPs would quickly grow into the millions, and then every page view would have to check through this list. Its doable but I don't think it is a big problem... if someone wants to sit there refreshing it doesn't really hurt anyone.
