As becoming a Customize.org admin, I have felt an over-abundance of warmth and welcome as a placement of administrator.
I have tried my hardest to give people reviews and help them with new ideas to expand on their work. I hope people do not mind my lengthy reviews! =)
But, what I can't stand is this:
I cannot stand AWESOME digital arts who can be the biggest dick heads in the world. I can't stand that if I right a review about a great piece of art, and maybe mention one small thing, the digital artist comes back to me saying "You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Go away".
So far I have recieved e-mail from one user who claims I was an arrogant asshole in my review of his wallpapers. Personally, I felt that his wallpapers were not rendered well and that very little work was put into them. But, thats another matter.
But, reading some posts by some great artists, I can see how much of an asshole they can be. For example, I have seen some artwork by "un-named creator" who creates this incredible piece. But when another "un-named user" said "I don't like it", the "un-name creator" blew up in a rage.
So, I decided to look into this into a few more of the "better" artists out there. And there are LOTS who are like that.
Really, who cares whether or not people like you're work.
YOU, as a user, agreed to a disclaimer when registering that people are allowed to make the comments they want to make. We also have a disclaimer that says "Each user shall be treated with the utmost RESPECT". And that is either from an admin or a common user.
But I can't stand when a great artist doesn't get the "spotlight" and some "nobody" does, they get all pissed off.
We are a community. EVERYONE has a RIGHT to voice their opinions about somebodies piece of artwork. Customize.org is a place where you can post your artwork, skins, etc., to be given to the community AND to see what the community thinks of how you can improve on it. If you can't stand some "nobody" saying "hey, i think you should try this instead", and you replying saying "you don't know what your talking about" ... why are you here?
Personally, if you cannot take it on a website, how are you going to do in the work world? I have clients who CONSTANTLY make me change my pieces of work. I don't tell them "No, I don't want to change it. You're an idiot." That will lose me that client and therefore lose me MONEY.
If you can't take it here, then you won't be able to take the head in the real world. The average age of people on this website is around 18 and for lots of them, they don't have clients yet. But some of those named artists already do at that age. Really, do you treat your clients like this?!
So here's the deal. I could care less what you think of my comments. To me, I AM YOUR CLIENT, and YOU are my artist to create something for me. Treat ME with respect and I will give it right back to you. If you DON'T treat me with respect, I will NOT give respect back to you.
I'm almost positive that a lot of users feel the same way as I do. If you wanna be a troll, fine. But you won't get respect from anyone else in the community. Therefore, you are going to lose your clients. But yea, if you wanna be troll. Be one. But the less you respect me and/or anyone, is the less I or they will respect you.

Indeed. I've said this before: Take a college-level art class, and you'll learn that the art world isn't all sunshine and butterflies. You get criticism, and it isn't sugar coated. Should it be? Maybe. It doesn't matter if it is or not; you use the criticism to make the peice better. Taking offense isn't going to help anything.
Crap. I just remembered that I have a big drawing due for Art on Tuesday...
Right Fortis? Really, my college professors never give up on perfecting my artwork. And they are right, because my clients are the same way and it's constantly gonna be like that.
If people can't even take the heat here on Customize ... on a WEBSITE that has users across the world, how are they going to present themselves to ONE single Client. Personally, if I saw all this great work from this website, and saw the owner was a dickhead, I'd tell him to fuck off and find somebody else for the job. His loss, not mine. I save the money to somebody who CAN do the job AND have good people skills.

Not all of us want to bring our stuff into the real world. Not all of us want to do this for a living. I know I wouldn't, because when you do something you like as a job, it WILL become a chore, eventually.
i feel for you, rkenshin. i have the luxury of rating pieces i feel i want to rate, and i usually choose the ones that i can say something nice about (not always, tho). but fear not; we all think you're doing a great job, one i'm not sure i'd like to take on.
even if you create something so worthy, there will always be someone who hates it. no biggie. you make these skins/walls FOR YOURSELF, and if ppl like it and use it too, bonus.
i really kinda feel custo got up on its feet much more effective again after the slight sleeping period. Time to prove what we are good for in the olympics >:)

JAFO, an admin is just another user with certain privileges and responsibilities. Simply because one is an admin, doesn't mean his views and attitude represent those of all of the admins here.
oddly i don't think i've ever been called an arrogant ass in the skinning community (not to say it's not happened person or elsewhere), but here people tend to like me :p i don't know why.
JAFO: You have my respect. In the fact that you are three years younger than my mother, and still hang out around here. You have my respect cause you have done some of the coolest things with litestep that i've ever seen.

um. i'm going to be honest. i dont respect jafo. i dont know him in real life and i might respect his real life persona if i met it.
but i dont respect jafo. jafo is a piss poor artist, i actualy looked at some of his devart stuff and was frankly surprised at how bad it was. jafo is also insanely headstrong. for someone with as little talent he certainly talks a lot.
he's something of a scenewhore really. you know that kid that always hangs around you and keeps saying "yeah! me too!" to everything? the one that acts all tough no matter what happens? the one cant fit in and tries really really hard?
yeah. i get that vibe off of him every time he presents an argument.

There's a lot of artists who are headstrong, and that's why I created this thread.
There's a lot of artists who may not be as good and be so cocky, while there are also artists who are awesome, who ALSO are cocky. Theres no reason to be.
You post here to recieve comments. Don't be demeaning if somebody says "hey, I think you need to correct this" ... and don't be demeaning by telling somebody to "Fuck off".
Like I said, you won't get respect from ANYONE until you respect them first.

Customize.org Admin who was drunk last night and trying to rate things
yeah, i realized you didn't mean it as a shot, i just thought i'd say that, pod. (secretly jealous of pod's admin status at custo AND deskmod) (getting drunk off power, indeed)
once again, there was another perfect example of both pod and miriku conveying their personal views about JAFO, which happen to be very different. the fact that they both happen to be admins here does not mean their views are representative of custo's views. sorry if i'm being redundant but sometimes i don't think people realize this.
if comments are all the artist is looking for, then he is doing it for the wrong reason....no matter how good he is or isn't
i have seen some of the greatest artists, in my opinion, go on wild, pointless rants because someone left a bad comment on their page....seems to me like they are sinking lower than they deserve..
then again i have seen some of the greatest artists be INCREDIBLY mature about things, including ripping!
Adam...No...I simply will never support this site further, either with help on things-LiteSTEP, or with uploads of any of my skins, as they are too 'piss-poor' for the likes of miriku anyway...;)

JAFO, I feel that your a making a big deal about such a small situation. But I also have read in prior posts by yourself, that you have been no better than anyone else, or for miriku, for that matter.
You put yourself on a pedastle and because somebody doesn't like your work doesn't make you any better than that user/admin/etc. that has reviewed your material poorly.
Sorry to see you go JAFO, but personally, you are no better than the next person.

i have to agree with jafo slightly on this one. there's nothing worse than working hard on a skin or piece of art for days on end, only to have some 'nobody' (rkenshin's word, not mine) come along and give you a rating of '1' and make some crappy comment. this happened just this morning when i uploaded my new skin, and it's going to affect the chances of people seeing it as the library is listed in rating order by default.
there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism. in fact, i enjoy getting helpful comments about my work. but it's understandable that certain artists are prone to snap back at those who outright criticize their work if they are treated badly on this site. just as the artists should respect the nobodies and their comments, the nobodies should respect the artists and the hard work they put into their submissions for this site.
in fact, i'd like to see some sort of system whereby you can remove unfair comments from your submissions, but within reason of course.
i'd have to say that this site is among the worst for unfair slating of work, but it won't stop me sharing my skins.
this one i stick to -> they're just public reviews people. for every email i get saying "thanks for the review" i get 5 to 10 of the "u r gay" variaty. thats the way it is, and it's no big deal.
I really got to say, who gives a fuck. I mean it stings when people are asses, but what can you except not submit? I've learned to ignore 'em. So should you.
grayhaze: man, pay no attention to those kinds of people, if all they are doing is giving you meaningless, negative crap then ignore it....i saw the skin you made that was given a "1" by a public peon, and frankly...that was a badass skin
artists like grayhaze need to learn that the world is full of immature people, so don't encourage them by responding to some lame trick they pulled for shock value...
What the deal with JAFO and Miriku is their own beef, not mine. It's none of my business.
The purpose of this thread was to NOT just single out users who are trolls and do it for fun. But it also points at really great skinners .... such as xpedition ... that can make some really nice shit. And when somebody just says "Hey, I think you can change this" (look at his current submits, you'll see what I'm talking about), he blows up at the user and say "you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. go away" ....
This makes the "awesome artist" because just another troll because he isn't keen to taking some suggestions from somebody else. I'm not just saying its one users, but I see it from A LOT of users, good AND bad. I like the criticism from people. I used it twice for my last wallpaper I submitted and they helped me to make it better.
I just want respect, just like everyone else does, whether its from an artist, another admin, anyone. I don't care who it is. Everyone deserves that respect and decency (spelling).
But people who are going to disrespect me, I will give it right back to them. If their going to say to me "Fuck off cunt, you're a fucking fag", I'm going to respond by "OK." *Delete Submission*
If thats too harsh, so be it. But maybe it will teach people some damn respect to each other when it comes to "constructive criticism".
Unlike my screenshot I had on the "SS of the day", two new users feel like I'm a complete idiot and that I don't belong here because I didn't "customize my desktop other than explorer.exe.".
Customization comes in many different forms. Having running themes, using programs if need be, etc. You don't HAVE to use Windowblinds. You dont HAVE to use Style XP. The ultimate customization is when somebody can take the classic interface of ANY OS and make it look appetizing (overall coinciding theme using colors, wallpapers, and skins for any programs they are using).
Colossus, like I said, I'm not pointing at people who are just trolls saying "fuck off" or "this fucking sucks". I'm point at people who can't EVEN take the criticism from the admin and/or user to make their piece of work better.
So far since I have been admin, I have been IMed so many freaking times from Custo users telling how much I helped them out in my reviews and that they improved their piece just by simple suggestions. I have yet to see that, however, from some of the big name artists who happen to think they are "the shit" and don't need any help.
Get a clue. The workworld is like that. Your boss doesn't like what you do, he's going to criticise you. If you say "Fuck off" to him, he's gonna say "There's the door. Have a great life. Pick up your last paycheck next week".

I love the IMs, I love the e-mails and talking to people all the time. But I won't take the disrespect. I WILL e-mail people back and say "Hey, why did you say that" or I will IM them and ask that.
I will use every means necessary to make this place better. I want Custo to be a place where artists can open up their minds and learn new ideas from others. And so far, none of the other admin's have complained about me and what I have been doing and how I have been working my ass off to accomplish it.
The disclaimer everyone agrees to when they sign up states "Treat every user the utmost respect." (not exact words). I see users elsewhere doing that (Deskmod, Skinz, etc.), why not here? Maybe an idea should be brought up for "Reporting Abusive Comments". Who knows, thats another message board.
JAFO I agree with you 100% on everything you have said so far, just dont post your stuff man.. and dont argue with them.. some people here can think for themselves and know right from wrong.
Others go with the flow and follow popular opinion. its better to count your losses and move on the miriku comment was totally tasteless by the way, just very bad behaviour im sure others feel that way but they dont want to comment... because as you know the tallest blade of grass is the first to get cut and as soon a you comment about an admin your ass in plundered..

rkenshin - well, in a way the accomplished artists who snipe at you deserve to be ignored even more than the plain old trolls. If you have the smarts and skills to skin and paper well, you should have the smarts to take a critique.....Don't let it bug you so much. Just delete the IM or mail as soon as it looks bad/abusive, and deny them the satisfaction of annoying you. Or send really obscene mails back to the sender's ISP postmaster and get 'em warned.

For example...lets just use a top name artist.
Lets say Shinter released a new wallpaper. And lets say everyone rates it as a 100 and says its awesome work. Then you got one user who says its only a 90 and says "Well, i think you should maybe touch up the corner or remove this blemish or maybe that little cube or piece of text" ... in a nice manner.
Then Shinter returns and says "fuck you, you dont know what your talking about. my work is awesome".
now, we know Shinter wouldn't ever do that ... but its the example. Is that a better example? Sorry, I sound all messed up since I have yet to sleep in 21 hours.
I like responding to the e-mails because 99% of the time I prove that user wrong. Its fun. =) And for IMs, I only get the nicest people in the world IMing me =)
Max, now you are comparing all the admins to the rest and that is very stereotypical of you. Everyone is free to post what they want and say what they want. Thats the purpose of this thread. Why is it entitled "Respect"?!

You do have to take a side when talking about respect. I do not always agree with an individual. I do not always like what an individual is doing. I sometimes cannot respect the behavior of others. I do, however, always try to practice respect and respectful behavior. It is nice to see you, rkenshin, practicing the respect that you desire from others. I must agree with several other's posting on this thead that there have been "some admins" that have not practiced respect. Sure, it is their choice, but I disagree that it is good policy or that it is conducive to the goal of this site. If others would take your approach and set the example (which is what I expect of admins on any site) then perhaps this site would surpass all expectations.
i´m with miriku. sorry jafo, you are really putting yourself on a pedestal.i also think your help on LiteStep is not that much important. you simply are not into LiteStep like it is today. there is so much that has changed. btw: i never saw you helping anybody on the litestep.net forums.

Perhaps I have just given up on repetitive responses to the same old questions about how/why/if LiteSTEP.....;p And you 'simply' have no idea what I may or may not be into 'today'.
