We are currently doing some spring cleaning on the categories and bringing them up to date. For one, we will be giving more weight to applications that are popular today (and not bogged down with 9 years of history).
I know we also are missing quite a few of the latest skinnable applications. Although these can be suggested through the upload process, I'd like to try and get them up to date. I will then do a news post listing the new categories to make sure people know they exist.
So, please list away! (descriptions/links would be quite helpful)
I know this is a site about customization ... so wallpapers normally need to be functional... but there are also a great deal of artistic wallpapers such as http://customize.org/wallpapers/33515 that don't always fit what we would use as a wallpaper ... they could be identified via tags ... but just wondering whether it would be worth having separate categories for artistic ... and functional
I beg to differ. NOTHING wil ever increase the popularity of Foobar. Why? Because of the unwillingness of foobar customizers to offer assistance to anyone new to the software and wanting to use it. The software itself looks crap in its original form and it is impossible to customize it with the 'ELITIST GEEK' attitude shown by the people who do know t customize. Not only is there a general lack of info/guides, and I mean, info/guides written in normal, easy to comprehend english!, but look at skins for Foobar on Cunstomize.org itself. What you download is just a bunch of files that the avergae NEW-TO-FOOBAR person has no idea what to do with and the skinner does not have the decency to even include a readme. I say 'decency' because WTF is the point of uploading something 99% of people out there do not know what the hecck to do with. And please try getting someone who knows to customize to help you... you will see what i mean by 'ELITIST GEEK' attitude.
Parody to depict what I haev encounterd in my search to be able to customize foobar : Elitist Foobar Geek: My foobar looks so leet and roxxor while your winamp looks suxxor. Normal Person: That does look nice, how do I make my regular foobar look like that? (Nice, normal question) Elitist Foobar Geek: You cant!! Its the domain of 'Elitist Geek Asses' like me!!
If you are such 'geek' as mentioned before, take the time out to think and realize that not everyone understands 'geek' speak and you do need to explain yourself a little more clearly. So instead of ranting against my post, please take the time to write a half decent guide or go write up a readme for your skin. That would be much more worth the effort to prove me wrong.
xpac, i feel your pain... i've complained about this before too. however, with the gsm suite came a couple of awesome foobar mods, and the authors did in fact explain how to get it to work. i was able to, so the "average" person should be able to as well... sorry, i'm at work at the moment, so i don't have time to track down the link to the skin, but its pretty popular around here so you should be able to get it without too much trouble...
but to go back to your original point, folks its valid... foobar is great, but unless people build a decent how-to, its not ever going to get where it could... i think a site like the old help site for litestep would be awesome... you could learn everything from the installer to the modules, etc... at that site for litestep and it made it so easy... ok, maybe not soooo easy, but easy enough... lol
Yeh, I've never tried Foobar simply because the lack of skins being shared, and lack of people explaining how to skin. Better off with Winamp; It's more widely used and easier (?) to skin for (I would imagine).
...I thought this was about new skin categorys ....the foobar category was here before evo even ....and the hydrogenaudio wiki is quite a decent help guide imo.... also everytime I asked a question on hydrogenaudio I got it answered quite fast so I can't share your opinion on the atitude of your elitist geek foobar skinners
I'd have to agree with Mad completely, if you actually take the time to look for some help on it you'd find it buddy.
And besides, Foobar is easy to skin, because it's not actually skinning. It's just formatting how you want it to display within a regular window. At least the 0.8 is, I saw 0.9 and holy crap that's intimidating.
Here's a couple of apps I'd like to see here, but they're not new, probably no longer under development, and would only bog down your categories with more extraneous leftovers. The plus side would be seeing what custo would do with them.
1: switch - color picker superior to colorpad (skins) 2: hovernews or newsplorer - newsplorer being the best 3: samegame - old, simple game. fun to skin...
I suggest to merge the categories "Winamp1" and "Winamp2" into a category called "Winamp classic", and "Winamp3" would be "Winamp Modern", sometimes the current categories make some Winamp skinners confused.
For excess: You imagined, you got twice: skinning Winamp classic is infinitely easy.
