I don't remember ever having seen a thread like this, so here it goes. I think it might be interesting to see where everyone's nicknames come from.
Mine is based on Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony, i noticed this name when i looked up the history of the Walkman. I changed it to aakio because the fist was already in use at devART.
actually MAD and aMADme are inspired by the japanese digital hardcore crossover cyber punk band THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS! ...they kinda disbanded last year :/... w/o me ever seeing them live
Back in 99-00 or so, I was really, really into jazz. When I was signing up here with my original tag, I just looked around the room for an idea for a name, this is what I saw:
my original nickname is "poluter", which I've been using for about 8-10 years. came up after I created a LS-theme with the name pollution.
now Im going by the nick jzatt which comes from Johan Zätterström (my name). switched because poluter was taken here at custo... actually taken by me a few years ago, and I couldn't find a way to restore my account.
Back when I first started here at custo I had a different nickname but I dont remember it. There was a guy called FrozenChrome that I really admired at the time and I liked the way his name looked and sounded. I did my best to choose a similarly cool name, but ended up thinking about frosted flakes and just made a minor change from there.
Aw, man, I miss FrozenChrome. That fellow, he had a good bit of style.
Anyway, my name was taken, oh, around 2000 or so, from the old Photoshop plugin Eye Candy. I needed a new alias to use in Quake, and I was getting tired of my old Starcraft nick (neomatrix, I believe it was). I was just dicking around in PS one afternoon, and, lo and behold, something clicked. The rest, as they say, is history.
It all started when I was six or seven years ago in my 10th grade biology class. We were assigned, in groups, to create a model of an environment and then create a commercial advertising a product that could be obtained from that environment. So, it dawned on me immediately what I was to do. You see, a couple of weeks before this assignment we had watched a video where some tribe in the african desert obtained water from the roots of some plant. So, I decided I'd create bottled root water. The commercial went like this:
My friend walks into the scene, sweating, exhausted. He wipes the sweat off his face, and exclaims that he wishes he had something to drink. Suddenly, I pop out from behind a desk, and he exclaims "SPARKLY FRESH MAN!" And I say, "that's right! Would you like to try some Sparkly Fresh Root Water??" He says yes. So he grabs the bottle (which I created a custom logo for), and chugs the thing. I look at my watch partway through his drinking. Then, when he's finished, we put on our cheesy smiles and say to the audience "SPARKLY FRESH ROOT WATER!" with our thumbs up.
So, I used SparklyFreshMan for a while, but shortened it to just sparkly. hooray.
My old name was deeznutz420, no clue how I came upon it though besides the fact that 420 is linked with the drug 'marijuana.' I got tired of that name though, it got old so quick so I just went to my original name "Garon Shanks" but I am thinking about dropping the 'shanks' and just going by garon.
my nick can mainly be blamed on the ragnarök manwah i guess. when i joined here at custo, i decided i didn't want to use my old nick. so i ended up looking around my room and, seeing one of the volumes sitting on my bookcase, decided to choose something from mythology.
i don't recall originally intending to use a name that was in the manwah, or even from norse mythology, but i ended up choosing Fenris after going through a whole host of other names. as i'd just gotten into studying mythologies again, it was a long list until Fenris just clicked.
thunderpeel's the name of an old beck song, circa '93-'94. What does it mean? I don't know, I just liked the ring to it, and have had no desire to find out.
Well, I'm a scientist. My old name, markovnikov35, came from organic chemistry; it is used to describe a certain type of addition of molecules to other compounds based on free radicals. It was a mouthful, so I needed to change it, but I didn't want to abridge it to m35 or something like that. I am an artist as well, so I wanted something to reflect that. I believe it was one of Liqachu's music playists on custo that I saw the band, cyantific. It was perfect.
A long time ago at a friends LAN party, far far away.. A friend was using his initials "EM". When we asked him why he hadn't a character for any middlename, he told us that he had no such - so we all made fun of his "shortage" by using our full initials and now I'm stuck with it =)
When dinosaurs roamed the earth, there was AOL. And from this deposit of sludge, I needed a screenname. My real name was taken, naturally, and using Smith as an example, I didn't want Smith1234 as a screenname. Coincidentally, the British Open at Royal Troon was on the box as I was contemplating a name. Being an avid golfer, I thought it was kind of a good name, because I could go by "troon" or "roy" or the whole name. Anyway, it's kinda' stupid, but that's how it came about.
I rarely use the handle "darksheer" anymore--pretty much here and my email address are all that's left. It came from a video game released in 1994 called --which, I have to say, was a pretty cool game. But I really dug the concept of a city where there's never daylight and the comic-style backdrops for the game were beautiful. It was one of the first games to use live video, which was also pretty cool. At 14 years old, I thought the whole concept was awesome so I used the nickname.
...and it stuck. As I became involved in communities like custo--but most notably custo--I became known by that name, developed a reputation, etc. At this point, in any community I've been a member of for a long time, I'm stuck to it--though I almost always use "ds" now. But these days, I tend to just use my real name.
Hmm I recall being at my dads house years ago, and one of his friends brought a cd which was misspelled (or maybe intetionally) 'Kultrax' as in Cool tracks. I just digged it, and started using it, then shortened to Kul since some people said Kultrax sounded like some weird exotic evil animal. Im thinking about changing it but soo many things are based on it, it would mean too much changes.
i used to play games under the alias liquid, but then other people started using liquid too, so i decided to combine liquid with (the then new) pokamon. mainly because nobody else would have such a silly sounding alias :)
egolatra doesn't exist in english, the closest meaning would be "egotist", and well... i started to use it like 1 and a half years ago, i liked it because it is a single adjetive and if you put "egolatra" in google now, the very firsts results will be about me. In the few sites that i cant use egolatra cause it's taken, i use its plural and works like a charm (egolatras)
There once was a time when I had never used the internet, it's true. It was early 1996 and I had just gotten access to the world wide webbernets, desperately in need of a handle, (you can't chat or be l33t with out a handle! (....thanks Hackers)) I peered and gazed at my surroundings, till my eyes finally met the game in the Nintendo 64 console sitting under the TV. San Francisco Rush 64! The game I couldn't stop playing, so there I was, Rush64.. Already taken. CRAP! Had to think fast, my future internet life depended on it. Rush69? Nahhh, to immature even for a 10-10 year old, Rush11? Lammme. 64Rush? Too many of me.. Then it hit Rush68, that's it, it sounds, perfect! It's stuck and will probably stick forever.
PS: My real first name happens to be Rush and is generally unrelated to my online alias.
im skinny, im a percussionist, i enjoy chicken, and ever since i could remember friends and family have called me "stickboy" or "stick"
... wasn't until i actually wrote it down (ironically with a bic round stic pen) that i ex out the "K". visually it just looked better without it.
new clients or anyone else i contact through email are usually pretty quick to point it out and upon meeting in person they just sort of call me out as "that stic guy"
I'm a mormon, and one of my favorite stories is "Helaman and his 10,000 Stripling Warriors"... Also Stripling simply means young... but tons of people think It has something to do with stripping LOL... the Rz comes from my being a huge Razorback fan!
