What sort of customization is allowed in Vista? I have been eying it for the past couple of weeks but I find the start button to be highly annoying (yes it's a small complaint but one large enough to prevent me from doing the painful teeth pulling that is a reinstall of the OS).
I like the sound of 3d desktops (bottom of that link). Cant wait to see what they do with it. Hopefully sp1 for vista will come out by then. Staying on xp till then.
*sighs* What's wrong with Stardock again? Beyond the lack of the customize communities support that is. Windowsblinds used to suck, everyone knows it, Stardock makes money off skins and the skinning community, everyone knows that too. But has anyone actually given them a serious chance to prove themselves? They make great programs! Functional useful programs! They are constantly working to provide nifty stuff, it's a shame they don't get the respect where it's due. Free is great and all (preferred by me), but sometimes when a company devotes it's all (I've never run into any other company that does so much for so little; 29 programs all part of the "Object Desktop" package!) they deserve some sort of cash for it. I'm glad to see them (yet again) working with Microsoft to provide more functional well thought out programs. (too bad wincustomize users will make tons of worthless bulky skins for all said programs).
Ravers_anthem: Back in the day when Windowsblinds wasn't an integrated service it still only used under 10k memory on nearly 90% of the skins for it. Now that's still a lot for old computers (which shouldn't have been running XP anyways) but on Vista, you /need/ a new computer for the fancy shamncy 3D skins, and? Windowsblinds actually takes LESS memory than the internal engine now! I somehow assume this will be ignored anyways and the myth will live on though.
I just found this topic but I'm sorry that some people don't like Stardock.
With regards to Windows Vista, here are some of the FREE programs we are working on:
CursorVista Free is nearly ready for beta ObjectDock for Vista is already out and running on Vista LogonStudio Vista will soon be out BootSkin Vista in in development DeskScapes is already out.
These are free programs either already out or about to come out.
I realize that because Stardock is a company that makes commercial software that some people think that's a bad thing but I hope people consider how much Stardock gives away to help promote skinning (which it does because it is in its own interest).
As a person who enjoys making 3D scenes, I think I could make some nice Vista DreamScene stuff, so I'd like to play with that feature someday. I could go back and animate all my old still scenes. It would be cool to put very small, subtle animations in, like airplanes flying by in the distance, wires swaying, machinery making fine adjustments, etc.
as far as vista goes, i dont need it (yet) so I wont touch it (yet)... I think stardock does alot of great things, I use some of their apps and they're great, but its just windowblinds mainly that I haven't bothered with for a while, as most of the styles that I like have been released as a VS
frogbboy: may i ask wether the native cursor format (cur, ani) has gone through changes in Vista? maybe stuff like the size or png compression ... after all cursors are just icons with an additional tag. and are there any additional cursors in the basic cursor scheme or else in the system (as the ole cursors or the cd busy cursor)?
