that is what i meant fractal...admittedly, i havent tried running LS since i got another 512mb of ram, but before that, it lagged my machine a little bit...the lag wasnt bad, and it was definetly a fitting trade off for the usefulness of the program...i guess what i was saying is that i'll probably give it another shot when this latest build is released, and maybe even continue to use it...
Litestep has a teeny tiny footprint. It's themes that really define how it runs on your system. If you run a theme with tons of elements, images, and alpha transparencies, that will give you a bigger 'footprint.'

its been awhile since i last ran ls, but i'm pretty sure i used a fairly complex theme...maybe this was the cause for the afformentioned footprint.
Just plain desktop/hotkey/xpopup/xtray (sans bitmaps) is 13 megs of RAM and 8 swap over here though. Memory footprint has definitely grown in time. On the other hand, the total CPU time on this six year old machine is a mere ten seconds.
Or in other words, if you see lag whilst 'Stepping, there's probably something quite wrong with your machine or you're using a very heavy theme.
If you wanted to make a theme that uses the least amount of resources possible and still retains it's usefulness. Using xpopup, xlabel, and xtray without using any images is the best way to go, that's what I'm doing right now. It leaves plenty of room on the desktop for me to have windows open and for me to run a lot of other applications without the theme slowing down.
I'm actually considering taking the theme I'm working with right now and seeing how far I can take it, in terms of stylishness and functionality without using any images, and then releasing it.
Last time I tried you couldn't. Or at least, not in the way you can do in LiteStep. It's very easy to configure though and I love those toggles in the popup menus.
