I really have to agree with you there, i had my first experience with it when is was still called Longhorn and i still was a winbeta regular. I didn't like it back then and i don't like it now. Although i have to admit i like the new icons en segoe ui font, i set a pc up with this a few weeks ago, combined with windows classic and that looked quite nice.
i think they hit a large target audience perfectly, but think about these comparisons in gui...
win98/ME/2000 v. XP - XP as new release was only slightly better looking than previous windows versions, and added alot more features and usability rather than graphical flash...with the size of the caption bars in luna, it looked like they made it for half blind people...
XP v. Vista - Vista is the first ms os that had a specifically overhauled graphics engine/presentation style...you can see the evolution of technology more in the os, even if it was first seen like 5-6 years ago...imo, it blows XP out of the water, something luna never did, until skinning it came into play...
when considering how good vista looks versus xp and how good xp looked versus previous os's there is NO comparison...when users reach levels of customization on vista that are comparable to the ones we do on XP...whoa

Yes, Vista does support alpha blending. On just about everything. Later releases will also support what is called "multi-blending" which is alpha blending on different levels of intensities.
Looking at this again, I really do like some little bits hre and there, like the media player shot with all the albums, and the fact that all of its uniform, unlike luna and windows media player ten, bleh.
