I found the definition of the background is missing, so I added the following at the end of the theme.cfg file:
background: mod
background.modX: 4
background.modY: 4
background.color: grey20
background.colorTo: rgb:6/6/5c
That is a grey grid. I took this from a fluxbox sample style which is installed by default on Debian.
